Akademisches Orchester Leipzig

Leipzig, Germany

Akademisches Orchester Leipzig is the city's most renowned amateur symphony orchestra. Each season, the musicians perform six subscription concerts in the Great Hall of the Leipzig Gewandhaus and up to three chamber orchestra concerts in the Mendelssohn Hall. In addition to events on the professional music scene, the Academic Concerts are firmly established in Leipzig's musical life and are almost always sold out. Through the seriousness and continuity of its artistic work, the orchestra has earned a solid reputation in recent years and made interesting contributions to the musical life of the trade fair city. In its programming, the ensemble has succeeded in convincingly establishing its own profile on the Leipzig concert scene and avoiding well-trodden paths. In addition to works from the general concert literature, the concert programs always include lesser-known and unjustly forgotten pieces. The music of contemporary composers is also given due consideration. In recent years, the orchestra has commissioned compositions from, among others, the jazz pianist Stephan König.
