The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra (NBSO), founded in 1915 by Clarence Arey, is dedicated to integrating world-class music into the cultural fabric of the South Coast community. Arey, a prominent musician and educator, not only established the NBSO but also pioneered the first public high school orchestra program in Massachusetts. His efforts led to a statewide proliferation of student orchestras, significantly impacting music education. The NBSO continues to uphold Arey's vision by delivering high-caliber classical music performances and offering extensive educational programs that engage over 8,000 children annually. Governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees, the NBSO has undergone significant growth, with its budget increasing tenfold and concert offerings more than doubling over the past fourteen years. This growth is attributed to strategic planning, with four comprehensive plans implemented to ensure continuous development. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, the NBSO remains committed to enriching lives through the transformative power of music, fostering a deep appreciation and understanding of classical music among audiences of all ages.
