The title is not misleading – Anton Webern's "Im Sommerwind" (In the Summer Wind) from 1904 is indeed an unclouded orchestral idyll, still firmly in the tradition of Liszt, Wagner, and Strauss. Almost nothing betrays the future avant-garde artist – except perhaps the 20-year-old's already perceptible sensitivity for the finest sound blends. The germ of Mahler's Second Symphony was also a one-movement symphonic poem. It was initially titled "Totenfeier" (Funeral Celebration). This ultimately evolved into the five-movement "Resurrection Symphony," which transcends all boundaries in every respect. The finale, based on the chorale "Aufersteh'n, ja aufersteh'n wirst Du" (Resurrection, yes you will rise), features a huge orchestra, an equally large choir, and two vocal soloists, unfolding with poignant power.

In "Elements," Nina Šenk explores the balance between our everyday lives and elemental nature, each embodied by different groups of instruments. Benjamin Britten began work on his Violin Concerto in 1938, bringing the unfinished score with him when he emigrated to New York by ship with his partner, Peter Pears. The shock of two wars, the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, found its way into the work, as did the American popular music that Britten encountered during his stay in the USA. Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra was also written in exile, commissioned by the conductor Sergei Koussevitzky and his Boston Symphony Orchestra. Dietmar Holland described this last major orchestral work by Bartók, who, while seriously ill and almost penniless, had to wrest it from himself as a response to the horrors of the Second World War, as a "utopia of brotherhood between nations."

4th Toddler Concert: "Spring Wind & Sunshine"

The mighty opening movement of Johannes Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 begins with a timpani roll. And with its timpani and trumpets, this concerto was a flop at its premiere, with the composer himself as soloist: the symphonic ambitions of this piece were too new and unusual for an instrumental concerto, which is precisely why it is today regarded as a masterpiece. However, the scandal provoked by Igor Stravinsky's ballet "The Rite of Spring" at its premiere in Paris a good 50 years later cannot be surpassed. The audience erupted violently in response to music that sought to capture the atmosphere of a ritual "from pagan Russia" through the elemental power of rhythm.

In "Death and Transfiguration," the 26-year-old Richard Strauss intended to depict "the hour of death of a man who had strove for the highest ideals—hence, presumably, of an artist." The heroic "transfiguration theme," which embodies these ideals, was borrowed by film composer John Williams for his soundtrack to "Superman." The trumpet concerto by Johann Georg Neruda, a Bohemian composer of the 18th century, is in the "heroic key" of E-flat major. In its original form, the concerto was a horn concerto for a virtuoso in the Saxon Court Orchestra, tailored precisely to his abilities. Its triumphant success began in the 1960s in a version for trumpet. By a roundabout route and after much refinement, Johannes Brahms arrived at his Symphony No. 1. Here, Brahms heroically emancipates himself from Beethoven, a role model he perceived as overpowering, in a hymn-like finale.

5th Symphony Concert

In this children's opera by Hans Krása, siblings Aninka and Pepíček play the main roles: Hungry and worried that they won't be able to buy milk for their sick mother, they decide to earn money by playing on the streets. However, the grim organ grinder Brundibár thwarts their plans. With the help of many animals and the neighborhood children, they manage to drive Brundibár away and, with their music, raise the money they need to save him. After its premiere in a Jewish orphanage, Krása's children's opera was performed 55 times in the Theresienstadt ghetto, where the composer and many of the people involved in the premiere were deported by the Nazis. The Aachen Children's and Youth Choir is setting a precedent for humanity and against forgetting – including a performance at the Vogelsang memorial.

3. Toddler Concert: "Dance with Mozart, fall asleep with Bach"

Now things are getting exciting! Maurice Ravel characterized his orchestral work "La Valse," originally intended as a ballet and composed between 1906 and 1920, as "a kind of apotheosis of the Viennese waltz, which conjures up the impression of a fantastic and fatal whirlwind." The virtuosity of Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 is also almost dizzying. The composer himself played the piano part at the premiere in Chicago in 1921—and prescribed himself three hours of daily practice in preparation for this pianistic rollercoaster ride. The unpredictable wheel of Fortuna, the goddess of fate,is celebrated at the beginning and end of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." Orff used texts from a song codex from around 1300, kept in the Benediktbeuren monastery, as the basis for a monumental series of solo and choral songs, whose archaic style, with its particular emphasis on rhythm, continues to fascinate to this day.

simmering sensation lingers beneath the surface: In "Shadows of Stillness," Nina Šenk captures the anxiety of the standstill during the first weeks of the coronavirus lockdown. A touch of escapism hangs over Richard Strauss's oboe concerto:its idyllic tone and transparent texture give little clue to the circumstances under which the work was created. It was the first multi-movement orchestral work written by Strauss, then already 81 years old, after the end of the Second World War, a "great, yet unemotional swan song for a destroyed musical language" (Reinhard Schulz). With the peppery third movement, "Furiant," Antonín Dvořák gave his Symphony No. 6 a distinctly Bohemian character—at the same time, many details reveal a close influence from Dvořák's friend and patron, Johannes Brahms. This symphony brought him worldwide fame.

A proud "Allegro marziale" in Carl Nielsen's opera "Saul and David" sets the tone for David's heroic triumph over Goliath in the second act. Iridescence is an optical phenomenon in which the color of a surface changes depending on the viewing angle. Our concert program also features iridescence, ranging from chamber concerts to chamber plays: In Karlheinz Stockhausen's "The Little Harlequin" for solo clarinet from 1975, the soloist 'embodies' the eponymous Harlequin not only through music but also through dance movements. He also accompanies himself rhythmically by stamping his feet.

finally playing rock and pop music on "real" instruments. And these are, of course, woodwind instruments! In particular, the common recorder, which lends this music a very special touch. But what's possible with rock classics should surely be even more possible with the "real" classics! Wildes Holz takes on Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Brahms, and Telemann – and plays their music as if they were rock classics. And they are, in a way. And the treatment with woodwind humor, virtuosity, and a good dose of self-irony does these works exceptionally well! It's no coincidence that the trio has been playing on stages large and small across Germany for 25 years, becoming a classic in its own right.

Wild wood

an orchestral "breathing in and out" (Šenk). Camille Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 5 was composed in 1896 in Luxor, Egypt. The composer himself described the middle movement as "a kind of journey to the Orient." In addition to Arabic melodies recorded several years earlier, it contains "a Nubian love song that I heard boatmen sing on the Nile." Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov also paints pictures of an imaginary Orient in his "Scheherazade" from 1888. The eponymous princess tells adventurous stories for a thousand and one nights, for her survival is at stake – and Rimsky-Korsakov dresses these stories in beguiling orchestral palette.

Anno Schreier's aim when composing his "Sinfonia amorosa e giocosa" was to capture the "allegedly light, relaxed tone of Mozart's early symphonies," and perhaps also their humor. Tchaikovsky also attempted to awaken the spirit of a bygone era in his Variations on a Rococo Theme, whose soloist will be the award-winning cellist Gabriel Schwabe. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, which reflects his initial fascination with the rebellious Napoleon, exudes a revolutionary spirit.

Tchaikovsky in Aachen? – Of course! In 1887, the famous composer stayed in the city for a few weeks and used his stay to compose. He liked the surroundings, he used the time for long walks and was particularly enthusiastic about the animals in the zoo, which he visited as well as the numerous cafés. In this world premiere by the composer André Parfenov, General Music Director Christopher Ward follows in the footsteps of Tchaikovsky in Aachen together with schoolchildren.

As a composer, Franz Liszt is one of the most innovative musicians of the 19th century and one of the creators of the genre of tone poems, the most famous of which - based on the poetry of Alphonse de Lamartine - can be heard in this symphony concert: "Les Préludes". As a piano virtuoso, Liszt caused astonishment everywhere and this is reflected not least in his particularly complex Piano Concerto No. 2, which takes on downright symphonic features. César Franck also left his audience baffled: his symphony, which was to remain a solitary work in his work, seemed far too idiosyncratic. "Au banan"! - a concert evening whose virtuosity is astonishing.

It is one of the monoliths of symphonic literature: Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3, which had its premiere as part of the Tonkünstlerfest in Krefeld. It reveals an attempt at a musical cosmology that extends from inanimate matter to divine love. Like hardly any other work, it corresponds to the vision of the composer, who once said that the aim of a symphony is "to build a world using all the means of existing technology." This explains the combination of highly idiosyncratic sound characters, from blissful folk songs and appeal-like marching music to natural idylls and religious visions.

"Ömmer jet Nöits" - we give this phrase special meaning in this symphony concert. Firstly with the powerful, poetic Overture No. 2 by the composer Emilie Mayer, who is still rarely heard today. Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 is one of the composer's most frequently played works and,
thanks to its virtuoso passages and lyrical structure, continues to enjoy great popularity to this day. The main work of the concert offers a true novelty, as announced in the title: the world premiere of the "approximate sonata" by the Aachen composer Philipp Maintz.

In keeping with tradition, the Aachen Symphony Orchestra is heading into the heart of student life at the university - and to the sea - for the ninth time! Under the title " Seascapes " , the audience can discover what wind, waves, spray and storms sound like when composers set them to music. Presentations and interviews provide exciting background information. In addition to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's concert overture " Sea Calm and Happy Voyage " (based on the poem of the same name by Goethe) and Frank Bridges' powerful orchestral suite " The Sea " , a special highlight on the programme is the concerto for birds and orchestra " Cantus Arcticus " by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara

We are guests at the Cologne Philharmonic Hall and are celebrating the new year there with a very special double portion of Beethoven: "All men become brothers" promises the overwhelming finale of his Ninth, the famous setting of Schiller's "Ode to Joy" for four soloists, choir and orchestra. Maintz, a native of Aachen, was inspired to write his short orchestral piece "red china green house" by the conversation books of the deaf Beethoven. In this chamber concert, the interns of the Aachen Symphony Orchestra present themselves with a program they have compiled themselves, spanning the period from Viennese Classicism to the present day: in Franz Anton Hoffmeister's Quartet, the double bass plays first violin for a change. The Horn Trio op. 40 by Johannes Brahms and the 2nd String Quartet by Alexander Borodin evoke German and Russian Romanticism, respectively. And the Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov touchingly commemorates the loss of a close friend with his piece "Mariel" in the soft, muted colors of cello and marimba.

"Jodde Honger" - in this spirit, we present you with aural delights in this concert. Verdi's "Nabucco" overture opens the evening with an exquisite specialty of musical theater. William Walton's "Belshazzar's Feast", the musical setting of a biblical banquet, takes you into a world of opulent sounds and rousing choirs. The evening is rounded off with Tchaikovsky's powerful Symphony No. 4, which offers musical enjoyment with emotional depth and masterful melodies. The Aachen Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of its General Music Director Christopher Ward, performs together with the Aachen Theater Choir, the "Tonart" choir and baritone Ronan Collett, who lends his voice to Walton's composition.

The program of the 2nd chamber concert combines lightness and passion: The Serenade op. 10 for string trio from 1903 is the most famous chamber music work from the pen of the Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnányi. The title promises lighter musical entertainment, but the five movements are masterfully worked out in detail and an impressive variety of colors is extracted from the transparent trio formation. The situation is similar with Peter I. Tchaikovsky's string sextet, which he wrote as a "memory of Florence": in parts it is permeated by a serenade-like tone that was surely inspired by the happy trip to Tuscany from which the composer had recently returned.

Ghosts? In the theater? Then it's time for the ghost hunters. And who doesn't know the famous theme song from "Ghostbusters," the humorous and horror classic of the 1980s? After the great success of the previous season, this year we are once again presenting a family concert that will give us the creeps with spooky sounds. Under the direction of Hiroshi Ueno, the Aachen Symphony Orchestra will play at the witching hour.

2nd Family Concert: »Ghostbusters«

The motto "Saukäs" fits the works in this concert perfectly, starting with the overture by Wenzel Heinrich Veit, a contemporary of Robert Schumann and almost unknown today . We encounter great virtuosity in Mozart's Sinfonia concertante. Schubert's symphony is grand in terms of its size and ambition: Schumann raved about its "heavenly length".

Musicians from the Aachen Symphony Orchestra present true musical matters of the heart in different ensembles in the 1st Chamber Concert: Mozart's virtuoso string duo KV 423 was written as a friendly act for the ill Michael Haydn. And Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's string quartet op. 13 is even a double matter of the heart: a homage to Ludwig van Beethoven and a secret message of love. The program also includes two works for the unusual combination of clarinet and soprano by Louis Spohr and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

To commemorate the end of the Second World War in Aachen, the October Music is played every year in the sacred space of Aachen Cathedral.

Hardly any other composition combines the impossibility and power of a supernatural love like Wagner's prelude to "Tristan and Isolde", which culminates in the romantic love death. The Aachen composer Philipp Maintz describes the piano concerto genre as "one of the most beautiful and pleasurable playgrounds" - to which he pays homage here with one of his own representatives. The main work of the evening is Richard Strauss' great tone poem "Ein Heldenleben", a powerful orchestral piece that reflects the epic highs and lows of the eponymous hero in musical splendor.

On this occasion, the orchestra comes to you! Several instrumental ensembles play at various locations in Aachen city center and provide musical accompaniment to the event.
