Angels Vocal Art

Arcadia, CA, United States

Angels Vocal Art is a prestigious organization dedicated to the education and promotion of opera, with a particular focus on fostering the talents of young singers. Founded by Anna and Melvin Lin in 2006, the organization began when the legendary tenor Carlo Bergonzi was invited to conduct a series of master classes in Pasadena, California. Following the success of these classes, the initiative expanded to China, where vocal competitions were held in over 30 major cities, all in honor of Bergonzi. After the passing of Carlo Bergonzi in 2014, Angels Vocal Art committed itself to preserving his legacy. The organization's mission is to commemorate Bergonzi's life and to continue his passion for teaching by providing high-caliber educational and performance opportunities to emerging talented vocalists. Throughout its history, Angels Vocal Art has presented an impressive array of performances, including Giacomo Puccini’s "Il Trittico," Leonard Bernstein’s "Candide," and a "Gran Gala di Verdi." The organization also staged the Southern California premiere of "Anya17" by Adam Gorb, which addresses the issue of human trafficking. Other notable performances have included an abridged version of Verdi’s "La Traviata," a recital titled "Songs from Spain and the New World," and several renditions of "Evening of Opera," which showcases some of opera’s most beloved scenes. Master classes have been conducted by renowned artists such as tenor Vittorio Grigòlo and Metropolitan Opera star Victoria Livengood. Carlo Bergonzi, the inspiration behind Angels Vocal Art, was one of the most stylish Italian tenors of the post-war period, celebrated for his interpretations of Verdi as well as for roles in verismo operas and lighter lyric parts. Born near Verdi's hometown of Busseto, Italy, on July 13, 1924, Bergonzi initially began his career as a baritone in 1948 before retraining his voice and debuting as a tenor in 1951. His career spanned over six decades, during which he was admired for his beautiful sound and exceptional musicianship. Bergonzi was also known for his vocal longevity, astonishing audiences even at the age of seventy with his performances. Bergonzi was deeply connected to his roots and established the Accademia Verdiana in Busseto, which became a revered institution for aspiring tenors from around the world. His final master workshop in Beijing was a testament to his enduring influence as a master of Italian Opera. Bergonzi passed away on July 25, 2014, leaving behind an indelible mark on the world of opera. Angels Vocal Art continues to honor Bergonzi's memory and impact on the opera community through its programs and performances. The organization's latest news includes the 2021 Opera Festival featuring "La Voix Humaine," with recording sessions that took place in February and a video release scheduled for April. Angels Vocal Art's past performances have also graced the stage of Carnegie Hall, with productions such as "Il Tabarro," "Suor Angelica," "Gianni Schicchi," and "Opera Potpourri." The organization is governed by a dedicated staff and a board of directors, all of whom are committed to the advancement of opera and the nurturing of new talent. Angels Vocal Art's ongoing efforts to support and develop the next generation of opera singers ensure that the art form continues to thrive and that the legacy of Carlo Bergonzi and other operatic legends is preserved for future audiences.
