Dive into Theatrical Wonders: Unraveling The Pear Theatre's 2025 Lineup

Penelope, a music-theater piece, begins with a woman’s husband appearing at her door after an absence of 20 years, suffering from brain damage. A veteran of a modern war, he doesn’t know who he is and she doesn’t know who he’s become. While they wait together for his return to himself, she reads him The Odyssey, and in the journey of that book, she finds a way into her former husband’s memory and the terror and trauma of war.

Daphne and Ralph are young classics professors who have just made a discovery that is sure to turn them into academic superstars. But something goes disastrously wrong, and Daphne cries out in a panic, "Save me, gods of ancient Greece!" And the gods actually appear! The Ivy League will never be the same as a pair of screwball deities encounters the carnal complexity of college coeds, campus capers, and conspicuous consumption.

The Gods of Comedy and Everybody

The Agitators tells of the enduring but tempestuous friendship of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Great allies? Yes. And at times, great adversaries. Young abolitionists when they met in Rochester in the 1840s, they were full of hopes, dreams, and a common purpose. As they grew to become the cultural icons we know today, their movements collided and their friendship was severely tested.

Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger - love or death. The stakes? Ti Moune's life.

We asked our jury to vote at the end of the trial, and as promised, we are sharing the results of that vote with you! 

In the case of Jones v. Baker (the case of the burned farm sold at auction), 72% of the jury voted in favor of the plaintiff. In the case of Mason v. Baker (the case of the amended will for property and loss of wages), 76% of the jury voted in favor of the plaintiff. In both cases, more than half of those who voted in favor of the plaintiff indicated that they would choose to award a sum "greater than two million dollars.” Please note – in a states like California or Mississippi, the plaintiff must receive 9 out of 12 votes in favor of their suit in order to win a case. In those states, only the plaintiff John Mason would have won his case.  In states like Massachusetts where the burden is higher (a 5/6 or 10/12 vote is needed), neither plaintiff would have won.

Crawfish: We the Invisible is the story of Cristofer “Crawfish” Cruz, who reluctantly migrated to the Bay Area after Hurricane Katrina with his mother Aretha. Now, finding himself homeless after fighting the long and expensive battle of Aretha's dementia, Cristofer tells his story, assisted by the ghostly presence of Aretha, in a mix of narrative prose, spoken-word poetry and song.  Cristofer, once a home owner and member of the working class, brings a voice and face to the experience of homelessness and housing crisis in this country, particularly in the Bay Area, where the crisis is acute. 

Crawfish: We the Invisible

What would it be like to witness two geniuses at work? Silent Comedy legends Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton worked together only once. For the deeply autobiographical Limelight, Chaplin cast the down-on-his-luck Keaton to play a small part in his nostalgic story of an old comedian doing one last performance. This play imagines what it might have been like on that set while exploring the lives of these two titans of cinema. 

Chaplin and Keaton on the Set of Limelight explores the tension between the desire to entertain and the need to fight for a greater world in politically dangerous times. What responsibilities does an artist have beyond bringing a smile to the face of an audience?

Afong Moy is fourteen years old when she’s brought to the United States from Guangzhou Province in 1834. Allegedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil, she has been put on display for the American public as “The Chinese Lady.” For the next half-century, she performs for curious white people, showing them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. Soon her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. 

Inspired by the true story of Afong Moy’s life, The Chinese Lady is a dark, poetic, yet whimsical portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. After exchanging letters through the years into adulthood, both lives marked by personal trials and tribulations, the two ultimately reconnect for a brief affair - only to realize it is too late for both of them. 

However, a final letter after one’s untimely death soon surfaces, illustrating how close they truly were to each other despite their physical distance - as close as only true lovers can be.

When Ann thinks of her father, she immediately remembers playing Peter Pan in her hometown theater in Iowa, and the flowers he delivered after her performance. Her memory is jogged by the fact that she and her four siblings are in their father’s hospital room during his final moments. His death sparks a conversational wake that includes everything from arguments over politics to when each sibling realized that they grew up.

Henry stops an assassination plot, gives powerful speeches, and wins battles against the odds. In the end, he woos and marries the Princess of France, linking the two nations.

Roland, a bee keeper, and Marianne, a theoretical physicist, meet at a party. In that single moment, an unfathomable multitude of possibilities unfold. Their chance meeting might blossom into a meaningful relationship or a brief affair - it might lead to nothing at all.
