Celebrating Jazz Legacy and South Asian Classical Music at Flushing Town Hall

Ustad Naseeruddin Saami is a Pakistani classical vocalist of rarely heard depth, power, and presence. He is a master of both khayal (which roughly translates to imagina&on) and qawwali and the very last living practitioner of a mesmerizing and ancient 49-note microtonal vocal scale that dates back over 800 years. Ustad Saami is a revered figure, known for his rich, resonant voice that he implements like a fine-tuned instrument with devastaFng impact. His contribuFons to South Asian classical music have elevated him to living legend status, and his performances are not just concerts—they are spiritual events that bridge past and present, connecting audiences across cultural and temporal divides. Ustad Saami is a skilled teacher, and his two most famous students, the singers Zeb Bangash and Ali Sethi, have helped share his art with new audiences, gaining a beloved and devoted fanbase that spans continents. This first-in-a-lifetime concert will be opened by Zeb Bangash, a Pakistani pop superstar who, under Ustad Saami’s watchful eye, will be debuting a khayal. Ustad Saami will then be joined by the Saami Brothers, his talented sons, who continue the family's musical legacy, for a program of khayal as well as their rarely heard form of qawwal.

Jazz is an art form with no age limits! No one is too old or too young to play jazz.  In our Majors and Minors of Jazz concert, young and old musicians will meet. Two quintets: “Minor” musicians (age 12 to 19) and “Major” musicians (age 80 to 97) will present tunes of each member’s choosing and featuring each individual member.  The Elder Band of Majors will feature: Berth Hope (piano), Bill Crow (bass), Steve Little (drums), Keisha St. Joan (vocals), and Carol Sudhalter (saxophone), with very special guest: the legendary Houston Person (tenor saxophone). The Minors band features:  Marielle Hyacinthe (piano), Jeremiah Mosquera (bass), Ezra Kessler (drums), Lexi Maire (vocals), and Ben Punzalan (alto saxophone).

A dynamic celebration of West African music led by singer-songwriter and humanitarian Natu Camara.  This performance will uplift young audiences with traditional music from Guinea infused with rock, jazz and storytelling.  Students will be singing, clapping and dancing along.

Robert Mirabal and his Rare Tribal Mob band perform the music of his Taos, Pueblo heritage.  An award-winning musician and flute maker, Mirabal performs flute songs, tribal rock, with storytelling and dance. Mirabal is a two-time Grammy Award winner; and he was twice named the Native American Music Award’s Artist of the Year.  Students will learn about the diverse artistic traditions of Native Americans.

The heart of Chinese Theatre Works’ collections of shadow figures, The Pauline Benton Collection represents a significant historical and ethnographic treasure trove as well as an artistic resource. Pauline Benton began collecting these figures in China during her stays in Peking during the 20’s and 30’s. Some of the shadow figures in the collection were already antiques she acquired them. A few date back as far as the 18th and early 19th centuries; and many regional styles of figure design are represented. Most of the figures in the collection Benton commissioned from local shadow craftsmen in the “Luanchow” style, popular at that time around the vicinity of Peking. She also commissioned several complete sets of figures and large scenic units somewhat larger than the traditional Luanchow-style figure, (14-19” tall, instead of the usual 9-12”).

The concert at Flushing Town Hall is the third event in the second edition of the "Rathaus Festival." Organized by Queens College/Aaron Copland School of Music and the Polish Chamber Musicians' Association, the festival highlights rare chamber music by emigrant composers who, like Karol Rathaus, forged new artistic paths. Throughout the concerts, audiences can listen to works deeply rooted in diverse cultures, trends, and historical contexts. The Flushing concert will feature a mixed program of six composers: L. Różycki, R. Ryterband, W. Lutosławski, H. M. Górecki, T. Musgrave, and K. Rathaus.

New Music Horizons presents the music of classical composer Stanley Grill and jazz composer Mark Wade. Stanley Grill will have his music performed by the critically acclaimed chamber ensemble Eight Strings and a Whistle. They will play a selection from Grill's "Whirr of Wings" Suite which is inspired by society's inability to effectively mitigate our impact on the climate. The Mark Wade Trio will perform some of Wade's new compositions for their upcoming 4th album release.

Seo Jungmin is a Korean Gayageum artist and composer who pushes the boundaries between traditional and contemporary music with her exceptional skills on the 25-string Gayageum. As a member of the renowned Korean traditional music duo Su:m, Seo has earned global recognition through performances at major festivals such as WOMEX, WOMAD, and SXSW.

Six decades of music, sixty-five years of song, generations tied together through the force of will of a matriarchy of powerful Black women. This is the African-American gospel group The Legendary Ingramettes, founded by Maggie Ingram (who passed away in 2015) as a way to keep her family together through hardship, and taken up by her daughter Almeta Ingram-Miller as a way to continue Maggie’s legacy. Inspired by the Black gospel male quartets of the 1940s and 50s, now known as Richmond, Virginia’s “First Family of Gospel Music” The Legendary Ingramettes bring roof-raising harmonies and explosively powerful vocals, all driven by the voices of women backed by a rock-solid house-shaking rhythm section.

For this concert, QSO turns the musical charm to eleven! Dances of Panama by William Grant Still mixes Latin and African influences into a colorful Caribbean cocktail. Next on the menu is the jazz- and pop-music influenced Suite antique by John Rutter that features flute and harpsichord. The main course is among the happiest pieces written by Franz Schubert – his irresistibly hummable Symphony No. 5.

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and Flushing Town Hall reflect on the years past and pay tribute to the festival founder, Nai-Ni Chen. The event celebrates the vibrant AAPI arts community of Flushing, Queens, and since its inception, the festival has featured many emerging talents. This year, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will present the dances of Keerati Jinakunwiphat, Lenora Lee and the music of New Asia Chamber Music Society alongside Nai-Ni Chen’s work.

Capoeira Luanda Queens hosts "ENERGIA EM QUEENS" ("Energy in Queens") is an event in Queens bringing together Capoeira artists and African-Brazilian dance and culture for three days of workshops May 2-4 at Valence College Prep. Workshops will be in Capoeira, Samba, Maculele (an African-Brazilian stick dance), and music. Some guest teachers include Mestre Jelon Vieira, artistic director of DanceBrazil and headmaster of Capoeira Luanda, with schools all over the world; ContraMestre Sabia; and Janete Silva, a professional dance teacher of Samba who currently teaches at Alvin Ailey. These workshops will be open to all community members - for all levels of abilities, skills and ages. On the event's final day, we will have a Capoeira music and Maculele demonstration. Through song and movement, people will present their stories of how Capoeira changed their lives. The event will culminate in the Batizado & Troca de Cordas - a ceremony where Capoeira students will receive their first corda (like a belt in other martial arts) or move on to their next corda level.

Renowned violinist Stella Chen, will be performing two captivating violin concertos by Mozart. Opening with the sophisticated 1st Violin Concerto, followed by her collaboration with celebrated violist Matthew Lipman to deliver the audience-favorite Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola. Under the direction of Dongmin Kim, NYCP is poised to bring Haydn's vivacious Symphony No. 43, Mercury, to life.

New York Classical Players feat. Stella Chen

Grosse Isle, a traditional music trio hailed as "absolutely magical" by The Irish Music Magazine. Sophie Lavoie du Lac-St-Jean (fiddle, piano, vocal), André Marchand (guitar, vocal), and Fiachra O’Regan (uilleann pipes, whistle, banjo) blend Irish and Québécois traditional music with original compositions. Their rich and enveloping music ranges from laments to lively reels and jigs, promising a varied and captivating performance.  The band name refers to the story of the mass arrival of the Irish in the 19th century, on Grosse Île in the St. Lawrence River, as they fled the Great Famine. It is a striking encounter between two peoples and two cultures.

The Nai Ni Chen Dance Company presents Red Firecrackers, a spectacular production of dazzling props, colorful costumes, mesmerizing music, fantastic acrobatics and lively dance by top notch performers telling the story of the origin of the Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration where a group of villagers, working together, defeated a terrifying monster of the ages. This heartwarming story highlights the intrinsic value of coming together, courage and ingenuity. It also explains some of the origin of the tradition of the Chinese Lunar New Year, why everyone wears red, puts up red decorations and gives red envelops. Let’s celebrate Chinese culture with Red Firecrackers!

Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of a traditional Lunar New Year festival, open to families and people of all ages. This program includes cultural performances featuring Umbrella Foot Juggling & Chinese Dance. The cultural fair will feature sugar painting, fortune god, artisans, traditional Chinese handicrafts, and a Red Envelope wall.

Flushing Town Hall is proud to present CelloGayageum, an exceptional intercultural musical duo comprised of cellist Sol Daniel Kim and Gayageum player Dayoung Yoon. Drawing inspiration from the "Pavillon of Unification" in Berlin, a city with a tragic history of war, division, and reunification, they have seamlessly blended the musical cultures and instruments of the cello and Gayageum to create a harmonious symbiosis in both sound and style.
