Ronald Cummings is an Associate Professor of Caribbean Literature and Black Diaspora Studies in the Department of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University. His work focuses on questions of gender and sexuality and Black cultural resistance. His work has been published in various journals and he is the editor of four critical volumes including Caribbean Literatures in Transition 1970-2020 (co-edited with Alison Donnell). He is also the editor of Make the World New: The Poetry of Lillian Allen. Ronald is associate editor of the Journal of West Indian Literature.

Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts Odette England is a visual artist, writer, and scholar. She is a 2022 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and has received grants and awards from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Puffin Foundation, and Anonymous Was a Woman, among many others. She has exhibited her work in more than 110 museums and galleries worldwide, published four award-winning photo books, and will release two more in 2024.

SOFIFRAN is delighted to announce the details of the next edition of the Salon du Livre des Francophonies du Niagara (SAFRAN), an exceptional literary event in and for the peninsula. The event will take place March 21st to 24th, 2024, and will begin at 10am each day in the prestigious space of the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, Brock University, downtown St Catharines. The opening will be held at the Film House, in the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre, also located in downtown St Catharines, on Thursday March 21, beginning at 18:00 in the Film House.  All events are free to attend, registration is required for the puppet performances and some workshops.

This talk will cover Azadeh Monzavi’s creative journey from an undergraduate arts student to an interdisciplinary researcher, artist, and educator. Points of discussion will also interrogate the decolonizing potential of textile practices as a form of communicative media within broader and interrelated frameworks of intersectional feminist activism and visual culture.

What happens when Molly McGillicuddy’s perfectly ordinary life is literally flipped on its head? The Mysterious Mind of Molly McGillicuddy examines traumatic brain injuries and the tumultuous journey back to health. Feelings of fear, uncertainty, and blame arise as Molly ponders how she can physically heal while navigating the darkness of mental health. Meanwhile, relationships are tested and simultaneously affirmed. Injured Molly must come to terms with her uniqueness and accept that she is now different due to the injury, but will she?

At the second annual Humanities Graduate Student Symposium, Brock graduate students from a variety of humanities disciplines will engage in conversation and investigate the connections between narratives and identity as scholars navigate the digital age. Graduate students will give short presentations on their interdisciplinary research, followed by a round-table discussion with presenters and those in attendance.

Walker Cultural Leader Series - Sound Jam with Composer John Robert Matz

Rankin Family Pavilion

Matz will share his experience composing for Tchia (Awaceb, 2023), an action-adventure game inspired by the developers' familial and cultural ties to New Caledonia. This collaboration with Indigenous Peoples in New Caledonia provides models of ethical cross-cultural collaborations and how modern western composers can respectfully highlight art forms and feature artists from and inspired by Indigenous culture. Tchia is also an example of how a small "indie" studio can prioritize music and sound, even on a small budget.

John Robert Matz will be answering student questions at a special in-person session of MUSI 3P45: Game Music on Monday January 20, 12:30-1:50pm, in the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. Registration is not required. All members of the Brock community are welcome.

For two thousand years, Ovid’s ‘mock-epic’ poem Metamorphoses (8 CE) has been interpreted as a meaningless work of clever poetry or within the Eurocentric classicism of empire. But contemporary artists and scholars have re-examined the rebelliousness of Ovid’s poem and rediscovered the full compassionate range of this exile’s vision.

Stuart Reid and Catherine Parayre will give a curators’ talk on “Occitan Border Lines” and cultural mediation. As a non-speaker of Occitan, Reid will focus on conceptual elements in Privat’s visual practice. Parayre, a scholar in contemporary Occitan literature, will contextualise the exhibition from an Occitan perspective.
