Stuart Reid and Catherine Parayre will give a curators’ talk on “Occitan Border Lines” and cultural mediation. As a non-speaker of Occitan, Reid will focus on conceptual elements in Privat’s visual practice. Parayre, a scholar in contemporary Occitan literature, will contextualise the exhibition from an Occitan perspective.

For two thousand years, Ovid’s ‘mock-epic’ poem Metamorphoses (8 CE) has been interpreted as a meaningless work of clever poetry or within the Eurocentric classicism of empire. But contemporary artists and scholars have re-examined the rebelliousness of Ovid’s poem and rediscovered the full compassionate range of this exile’s vision.

As part of the 2024-25 Walker Cultural Leader Series, the Department of Music is featuring the work of composer, performer, and music educator, John Robert Matz.

John Robert Matz will be answering student questions at a special in-person session of MUSI 3P45: Game Music on Monday January 20, 12:30-1:50pm, in the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. Registration is not required. All members of the Brock community are welcome.

Walker Cultural Leader Series - John Robert Matz: Game Music Guest Lecture

Matz will share his experience composing for Tchia (Awaceb, 2023), an action-adventure game inspired by the developers' familial and cultural ties to New Caledonia. This collaboration with Indigenous Peoples in New Caledonia provides models of ethical cross-cultural collaborations and how modern western composers can respectfully highlight art forms and feature artists from and inspired by Indigenous culture. Tchia is also an example of how a small "indie" studio can prioritize music and sound, even on a small budget.

The Medland and Green Inspiring Artists Bursary is open to all third-year Honours students enrolled in Dramatic Arts, Music, and Visual Arts. This bursary is to assist students with a unique opportunity (travel, internship, training, masterclass) to support their thesis or capstone project in the 2025-26 academic year. Ronald Cummings is an Associate Professor of Caribbean Literature and Black Diaspora Studies in the Department of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University. His work focuses on questions of gender and sexuality and Black cultural resistance. His work has been published in various journals and he is the editor of four critical volumes including Caribbean Literatures in Transition 1970-2020 (co-edited with Alison Donnell). He is also the editor of Make the World New: The Poetry of Lillian Allen. Ronald is associate editor of the Journal of West Indian Literature.

Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts Odette England is a visual artist, writer, and scholar. She is a 2022 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and has received grants and awards from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Puffin Foundation, and Anonymous Was a Woman, among many others. She has exhibited her work in more than 110 museums and galleries worldwide, published four award-winning photo books, and will release two more in 2024.

SOFIFRAN is delighted to announce the details of the next edition of the Salon du Livre des Francophonies du Niagara (SAFRAN), an exceptional literary event in and for the peninsula. The event will take place March 21st to 24th, 2024, and will begin at 10am each day in the prestigious space of the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, Brock University, downtown St Catharines. The opening will be held at the Film House, in the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre, also located in downtown St Catharines, on Thursday March 21, beginning at 18:00 in the Film House.  All events are free to attend, registration is required for the puppet performances and some workshops.

What happens when Molly McGillicuddy’s perfectly ordinary life is literally flipped on its head? The Mysterious Mind of Molly McGillicuddy examines traumatic brain injuries and the tumultuous journey back to health. Feelings of fear, uncertainty, and blame arise as Molly ponders how she can physically heal while navigating the darkness of mental health. Meanwhile, relationships are tested and simultaneously affirmed. Injured Molly must come to terms with her uniqueness and accept that she is now different due to the injury, but will she?
