His String Suite from 1877 is his first orchestral work and combines Slavic Romanticism with Baroque influences. For many, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is the "Mozart of the 19th century" – that's what Robert Schumann once called him. It goes without saying that his music harmonizes with the works of the Viennese classic. But Mendelssohn, who grew up in Berlin, was more than this label suggests. He was considered an innovative head of the Romantic era and a rediscoverer of baroque vocal music. He brought his fourth symphony back from a trip to Italy, which he began in Rome at the end of 1830. The work, full of temperament and cantabile, is still one of his most popular compositions today.

Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" has become an iconic piece of music through its use in films. However, it was originally written in 1936 as the second movement of a string quartet. Like Barber, Grammy-winning composer Jessie Montgomery comes from the USA. Her short piece "Starburst" (2012) tells of the explosive birth of new stars in "rapidly changing musical colors," she says.

The composer York Bowen grew up in the London suburb of Crouch Hill, where his father ran the renowned whiskey distillery "Bowen & McKechnie". After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, he conquered the concert halls as a piano virtuoso. But Bowen also played the viola and horn. In 1956 he composed a horn concerto whose beguiling beauty evokes a longing for bygone eras.

The program of the traditional New Year's concert includes well-known works by composers who will be celebrating an anniversary in 2025: The "Waltz King" Johann Strauss (son) will be celebrating his 200th birthday and the French impressionist Maurice Ravel his 150th birthday. Georges Bizet ("Carmen") died 150 years ago and the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich 50 years ago. The concert will be led by the chief conductor of the dkn Christoph Koncz, and the program will once again be hosted by the well-known radio and television presenter Daniel Finkernagel.

NEW YEAR'S CONCERT of the city of Neuss

Joseph Haydn's three violin concertos are worth discovering! The concerto in C major, composed in the early 1760s for the Italian violinist Luigi Tomasini, stands out. The celebrated virtuoso was concertmaster of the Esterházy court orchestra in Burgenland, which Haydn conducted. The Viennese classic, affectionately known as "Papa Haydn", also fascinated the Pulitzer Prize-winning American Caroline Shaw. In her piece "Entr'acte" (2011), she quotes extensively from Haydn's last string quartet.

The traditional Christmas concert of the German Chamber Academy Neuss will take place this time in the Christuskirche. The string sounds from Arcangelo Corelli's famous Christmas concert "Fatto per la notte di natale", the heavenly melodies of Arvo Pärt and baroque concertos by Giuseppe Sammartini or Georg Muffat will transport you into a pre-Christmas mood. The concert will be conducted by harpsichordist Luca Quintavalle. He performs in the major concert halls of Europe, the USA and Japan. For more than five years he was the harpsichordist of Cecilia Bartoli and Les Musiciens du Prince under the direction of Gianluca Capuano and since 2020 he has worked regularly as an assistant and continuo player with Fabio Biondi.

New Year's Concert Of The City Of Neuss 2024

Even "birdsong and an orange sunrise" can be found in his "Siegfried Idyll," explained Richard Wagner. The work for chamber orchestra was a birthday surprise for his wife Cosima and was first performed in 1870 in the stairwell of their home in Tribschen near Lucerne. The title alludes to their son Siegfried, but Wagner primarily quotes from the musical drama of the same name in his four-part opera "The Ring of the Nibelung."

In Ludwig van Beethoven's "Egmont" Overture, the poet and composer E.T.A. Hoffmann recognized a "magnificent tone painting" because, "as in a magic mirror," it summarized "the main features of the entire play." The introduction to the music for Goethe's tragedy, composed in 1810 and praising courage in the fight for freedom, is considered a masterful program overture.
