The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) is a distinguished constituent of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which is recognized as the largest performing arts complex in the world. CMS is renowned for its dedication to the performance, education, and broadcasting of chamber music, and it is credited with drawing more people to chamber music than any other organization of its kind. The society's home is the esteemed Alice Tully Hall, which is considered the premier venue for chamber music. Founded in 1969, CMS was envisioned by the American composer and then-President of Lincoln Center, William Schuman, as part of the final plans for the Lincoln Center. The organization was brought to life with the artistic direction of pianist Charles Wadsworth and the support and leadership of Alice Tully, its first Chair. The inaugural performance at Alice Tully Hall marked the beginning of a new chapter for chamber music in the United States. Under the artistic leadership of cellist David Finckel, a former member of the Emerson String Quartet, and pianist Wu Han, CMS has expanded its reach and repertoire. The society offers a diverse array of concert series and educational events that cater to both seasoned connoisseurs and newcomers to chamber music. Its rotating roster of multi-generational and international chamber musicians allows CMS to present a broad spectrum of works, from Renaissance pieces to contemporary compositions. CMS has a rich history of commissioning new works, having commissioned over 160 pieces from a variety of composers, such as Bruce Adolphe, Leonard Bernstein, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Additionally, the society supports contemporary composers through the Elise L. Stoeger Prize, a biennial cash award recognizing outstanding contributions to chamber music. The Bowers Program, named in honor of benefactors Daniel and Joanna S. Rose, is a key initiative of CMS, designed to nurture future chamber music leaders. This competitive residency program integrates young artists into CMS's activities, providing them with performance opportunities, mentorship, and exposure to a global network of chamber musicians and presenters. CMS's educational outreach is extensive, including school-based programs, family concerts, and master classes that reach thousands of individuals each year. These programs are designed to foster a deeper appreciation for chamber music among audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Touring is a significant part of CMS's mission to broaden the audience for chamber music. The society performs around 70 concerts each season outside of New York City, spanning North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. These tours are marked by the same high-quality performances and engaging programs that are characteristic of CMS. In addition to live performances, CMS has a strong media presence, offering live streaming of concerts, lectures, and master classes. Its weekly radio series, hosted by Co-Artistic Director David Finckel, reaches millions of listeners across North America and beyond. CMS also has a rich discography, with recordings available on various labels, including its own CMS Studio Recordings. The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center continues to uphold its founding vision by stimulating and supporting the appreciation, performance, and composition of chamber music through its diverse and dynamic activities.
