Nuremberg's Cultural Symphony: A Journey Through Sound and Soul

Swedish conductor Tobias Ringborg brings two northern European composers to Nuremberg: Wilhelm Stenhammar and Jean Sibelius were contemporaries, and the somewhat younger Stenhammar was heavily influenced by Sibelius in his later years. Yet in his 2nd Piano Concerto, Stenhammar is more in line with the tradition of German Late Romanticism and creates a simultaneously virtuosic and forceful work. Sibelius' 2nd Symphony was created a few years prior and, with its catchy themes, moving rhythms and full orchestral sound, became one of the most popular pieces of Finnish music in the world.

Cello extraordinaire and artist-in-residence Maximilian Hornung is performing as a soloist for the Chamber Music series at the opera house, where he will present two cello concertos. After the technically demanding, classic C Major Concerto by Haydn, he will perform an exciting new work by Georgian composer Vaja Azarashvili. The latter is particularly close to Hornung’s heart. The popular octet by Mendelssohn will serve as the energetic finale.

At the peak of his prolificacy, Richard Strauss composed his Alpine symphony. This tone poem, which explores the individual stages of a hike, is based on memories from his childhood in Munich's nearby mountains. Using a huge orchestra, Strauss depicts both the forces of nature and the human experience of this nature. The progression from sunrise to sunset is also a metaphor for a human life. In his early work Verklärte Nacht, based on a poem by Richard Dehmel, Arnold Schönberg tells the story of a woman who confesses to her lover that she expects such a human life.

From Vienna To Se­vil­le: A Mu­si­cal Jour­ney

Mikhail Glinka is considered the first composer to strive to make uniquely Russian music. However, the overture to his most well-known opera Ruslan and Ludmila owes much to Western European tradition. It thus anticipates the works of Tchaikovsky, who was often derided in Russia as a "Westerner". After his 5th Symphony was performed in the last season, his 6th, "Pathétique," is now in the programme. His last work sounds at many points like an alternatingly angry and melancholic goodbye to the world. Prokofiev's violin concerto also seeks out a "new simplicity," much like all his earlier works, and a reconciliation of modernity and musical tradition.

Two deeply religious composers open up the concert season of the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg in the Meistersingerhalle. Olivier Messiaen hoped to use his first large, suggestive orchestral work Les Offrandes oubliées to turn the colours of church windows into sound. Anton Bruckner was no less spiritual in his own goals for his music. In his 7th Symphony, which marked his breakthrough as a great symphonic composer, he most clearly describes humanity's ascent from hardship and the joys of life toward divine light.

The Young State Philharmonic was founded on the initiative of Joana Mallwitz and will continue to be led by GMD Roland Böer in the 2024/25 season. Young people in the metropolitan region who are interested in classical music can become members of the Young State Philharmonic. In several project phases over the course of a season, they gain deep insights into the world of the orchestra and theater. The young musicians are accompanied throughout the year by numerous orchestra sponsors and the music teacher Irina Roosz.

In the concert series "Dreiklang", the Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra leaves its usual concert halls and explores new venues in Nuremberg. This time, General Music Director Roland Böer invites you to the Congress Hall, the future destination of the State Theater. The program is dedicated to composers whose music was labeled "degenerate" and who subsequently had to emigrate externally or internally.

Modest Mussorgsky's classic "Pictures at an Exhibition" (arranged by Christian Reuter) tells many little stories with its music: about newly hatched chicks, about an old castle, about children playing in the park and much more. Theater educator Philipp Roosz has the right pictures to go with these stories.

"All people who care about music, especially chamber music, bow down to Franz Schubert's String Quintet in C major, happily admiringly - or enthusiastically. The work occupies a unique place in Schubert's work, indeed in music literature. It is enigmatic, and it is perfect... No one can fully unravel the musical mystery of this work or put it into words," says music critic Joachim Kaiser. "Shaker Loops" from 1978 is a masterpiece of minimal music and refers to the Shaker religious community, who get themselves into a frenzy through ritual shaking dances.

In the intoxication of twilight

In the youth concert, the furies dance, the ghosts sing, Rübezahl rumbles and the Flying Dutchman's ship howls: pretty scary! But why? Why does some music teach us to be afraid? The Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra is addressing this question in the youth concert.

Melancholy in its most beautiful romantic form dominates the program of the 8th Philharmonic Concert, which Frankfurt's General Music Director Thomas Guggeis will lead the State Philharmonic Orchestra through. The premonition of the imminent death of his son-in-law Richard Wagner and the funeral gondolas of Venice inspired Franz Liszt's piano piece, whose undulating 6/8 time in turn inspired the minimalist Adams to his arrangement. Wagner's five songs are based on his hopeless love for Mathilde Wesendonck. Even in Hans Werner Henze's version, they foreshadow "Tristan". Sergei Rachmaninoff was a master of combining beauty and melancholy, combining deep emotionality with captivating fullness of sound in his 2nd Symphony.

Salvation

Mendelssohn is still considered an outstanding musical prodigy today. One of his youthful masterpieces is his first string quintet, which he composed at the age of 15. A late work, however, is Bartók's trio "Contrasts". The piece is inspired by melodies from Bartók's homeland of Hungary - sounds that were familiar to him since childhood. Reger's clarinet quintet was his last composition. Homages to his great role models Mozart and Brahms can be heard as well as Reger's mature and masterful harmony.

Stone soup is not particularly tasty, but if you add different vegetables and herbs, it can become a delicious meal. Using the fairy tale "The Stone Soup", different instruments in an orchestra are introduced: when they all play together, they create a delicious sound.

In 1812, Beethoven wrote a love letter to an unknown lady that has occupied generations of researchers but also inspired musicians. In his violin concerto, which he wrote in 2019 for the violinist Midori, Detlev Glanert sees the words in Beethoven's famous letter as notes and the declaration of love as music. After the overture by Beethoven's student Ferdinand Ries, the master himself takes center stage in the 7th Philharmonic Concert: with the cheerful, thoughtful piano piece "Andante favori", which Roland Böer arranged for orchestra, and with his always surprising and not very triumphant 8th Symphony.

The concert series "Dreiklang" combines exciting locations with new concert impressions. This time, conductor Sándor Károlyi and the Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra are referring to the history of the Orpheum in the St. Johannis district, which is now used as an event hall. In the past, the Orpheum was not only a popular cinema, but also a drinking hall and mattress camp.

Dive with us into the depths of the sea with "Vox balaenae - Songs of the Whale" by George Crumb for flute, cello and piano! Travel to the savannahs and deserts with the string sextet "Leopards" by Fazil Say and learn something about the living conditions and habits of endangered species. The video department of the State Theater shows wonderful recordings to accompany the music. Dag Encke, director of the Nuremberg Zoo, brings the animal world to life for young and old. The concert is rounded off with the classic "The Carnival of Animals" by Camille Saint-Saëns. A musical safari and an animal-inspired and informed concert morning await you!

The 6th Philharmonic Concert offers a romantic fairy tale hour: Ravel tells of Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, Beauty and the Beast with his colourful orchestral language. Richard Strauss chose the pranks of Till Eulenspiegel as inspiration for his symphonic poem. He composes a rapid sequence of images in a virtuoso, humorous and extremely vivid manner "in the old rogue's way".

Once upon a time...

Franz Reizenstein, born in 1911, trained under Hindemith and after his emigration in 1934 under Vaughan Williams, created a diverse body of work. He also became known through his collaboration with the musical humorist Gerard Hoffnung. Chaya Arbel also came from Nuremberg (her birth name was Gerda Schloss); her family fled to Palestine in 1936. A concert with moving rediscoveries.

Macbeth's guilty conscience prevents him from sleeping. In contrast to him, the large organ in the Meistersingerhalle spends most of its life sleeping - a situation that composer Stefan Johannes Hanke wants to remedy with a commissioned work for the Nuremberg State Philharmonic. The tone poem "Macbeth" by Richard Strauss and Verdi's ballet music, which is rarely played in operas, refer directly to Shakespeare's antiheroes. In his opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk", Dmitri Shostakovich placed the figure of Lady Macbeth in the present and turned the icon of unscrupulousness into a great, rebellious lover.

Sleep no more

The string quartet is considered the supreme discipline of chamber music. Almost all important composers have written string quartets, with a few exceptions: Gustav Mahler and Hector Berlioz, for example. The ensemble around concertmaster Manuel Kastl has once again put together a beautiful program from the rich repertoire.

Four times four strings

In the 20th century, the gap between art and entertainment widened. But some composers did not play along: Kurt Weill, Erwin Dressel, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and George Gershwin refused to be pigeonholed and proved on both sides of the Atlantic that sophisticated music does not have to be boring. Kurt Weill's varied orchestral works have been rediscovered in recent years, and Erwin Dressel wrote one of the few solo concertos for the jazz instrument saxophone. After his expulsion from Austria, Korngold composed almost exclusively film music, and won an Oscar for his music for the major Hollywood production "Robin Hood". Gershwin set Americans' longing for old Europe to music in a humorous way. The internationally renowned conductor Erina Yashima will be appearing for the first time at the podium of the State Philharmonic.

For the New Year, the Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of its General Music Director Roland Böer, invites you on a musical journey around the world. The first part of the concert will feature well-known overtures and rarities from the concert literature, while the second part will feature composers from the Strauss dynasty as travel companions.

At Christmas time, the Orchestra Academy of the State Philharmonic Orchestra is putting on a chamber concert. Since the academy members only stay in Nuremberg for two years, the line-up is constantly changing - and so all that can be said about the program is that the audience can certainly look forward to a colorful and beautiful concert this time too.

The sea already sounds whipped up in the overture of the opera "The Wreckers" - after all, people here live off what the sea washes ashore after a storm. Tirrenio also comes from the sea to fool the ball guests with his nymphs in Henze's ballet "Undine" - with a colorful and virtuoso divertissement.

On the Saving Shore

The tuba is the instrument of the year 2024. The aim of this initiative by the German music councils is to focus on the deepest of all brass instruments. And that is exactly what Matthias Raggl, tubist of the State Philharmonic and part of the "Tuba Team Bavaria", will do in the 2nd chamber concert. The versatility of the youngest orchestral instrument is shown in original solo compositions by Mike Forbes and James Meador as well as a baroque cello sonata arranged for tuba and marimba. Works in tuba quartet formation and the "Konsertant Svit" by Christer Danielsson for solo tuba and brass quartet are on the program. A wide variety of playing techniques, such as beatbox and multiphonics, will be heard: tuba virtuoso and powerful in sound, velvety and filigree!

Plagued by writer's block, Gustav Mahler traveled to Lake Wörthersee in 1905. It was only a trip on the water that released his creative tension: with the first stroke of the oar, he came up with the theme of the introduction to his new symphony - number seven. The work was given the nickname "Song of the Night" because of its very dark, turbulent beginning and the two middle movements, which Mahler called "night music". But following the motto "per aspera ad astra" - "through toil to the stars" - more and more rays of hope appear as the work progresses and the symphony ends in a furious, solemn apotheosis, the theme of which is vaguely reminiscent of Richard Wagner's "Meistersinger" overture.

Antonio Vivaldi knew this too, and in his famous seasonal cycle he set many different weather phenomena to music. In reference to painting, a style that was prevalent in France from around 1890 to 1920 is also called "Impressionism" in music. Debussy in particular was influential with his very own musical language. At the same time, the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 was the first time that non-European music and musical instruments became known to a wider audience and influenced many composers in exciting ways.

If your holiday in Italy was once again far too short, you like to bring a souvenir home with you. In his concert overture “In the South”, Edward Elgar processed the impressions of his winter stay in Alassio in Liguria in 1903/04. Shortly before his famous “Carmen”, Georges Bizet completed his second symphony based on motifs that he had collected during his stay in Rome several years earlier. On the advice of Johannes Brahms, the 22-year-old Richard Strauss went on an educational trip to Rome and Naples in 1886. During the trip he sketched out the work that was to become his first symphonic poem and brought sunny greetings from Italy to his home in Munich.

No other animal sounds resemble music as much as birds. Many composers have thus been inspired by nightingales, larks, swans and other feathered artists of flight and song. A concert in cooperation with the Phil-CO2 Initiative and the Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz (LBV).

Familiar melodies, famous opera arias, catchy compositions – the "Heart & Soul" concert at the Gustav Adolf Memorial Church is aimed at everyone who enjoys listening to music and fondly remembering it. The informal, barrier-free setting offers people with and without dementia an ideal opportunity to enjoy an hour of culture together.

A composer of our time, Detlev Glanert, meets an icon of Classical music, Johannes Brahms. Glanert answers Brahms’ highly complex, dense, headstrong last symphony with a piece that he casually titles “Music with Brahms.” In this wildly dynamic orchestral piece, he reveals himself to be the successor to the great Romantic composer. The contradictions between gods and people are the theme of the poems Nänie by Friedrich Schiller and Schicksalslied by Friedrich Hölderlin, which Brahms put to choir and orchestra. His Romantic musical language proves to be the keeper of Classical-humanist tradition.

Music has the power to express emotions that we have no words for: happiness, grief, ecstasy and the dissolution of boundaries. William Walton, one of the most important English composers of the 20th century, finds in his neo-Romantic viola concerto a path between intimacy and emergence. The bizarre music-mystic Scriabin searched for a great synaesthetic mystery that was supposed to put humanity in a state of ecstasy. The closest he came to achieving this goal was with his captivating Poème de l’extase. Wagner's Tristan und Isolde is about the bonding of two people against all societal conventions, the celebration of an all-consuming and fatal love.

Artist-in-residence Maximilian Hornung and the musicians of the Staatsphilharmonie are organising a chamber concert in the Gluck-Saal. It is also important to him that he make music together with his colleagues from the cello group, and pieces for various cello ensembles are in the programme. The concert is topped off with a special work from the 20th century: Ernst von Dohnányi’s sextet will make its debut in our Chamber Music series.

Triad in the Gustav Adolf Memorial Church

Gustav Mahler's music focused on humanity in all its facets of life and emotion. Whether man longs for deliverance or to simply sit with others in a tavern are, for Mahler, merely different aggregate states of a single, infinitely precious existence. His 9th Symphony is not an optimistic work, but rather one of the assessment of a life. It is ambivalent, doubtful, even fearful.

The first concert master is the first violinist, he plays the major violin solos, he leads the orchestra's warm-up, and when the conductor makes a mistake, all the musicians look to him... Sebastian Casleanu has held this important position in the Staatsphilharmonie since 2019 and will present the audience with a wonderful surprise programme.

When the world is in the midst of football fever, the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg dedicates itself musically to the sport. Because it's not just football on the schedule, but cyclists and galloping horses go to the races and the audiences chant: olé, olé, olé!

Olé, Olé, Olé!

Antonín Dvořák's "Stabat Mater" – these are ten movements full of passion and devotion, full of adoration and supplication. And at the end, a light of hope shines. So much of the famous Bohemian composer's personal experience has flowed into this music. We are celebrating 75 years of the ION Music Festival in Nuremberg with this masterpiece in the unique atmosphere of St. Sebald's Church.

The Junge Staatsphilharmonie is the youth orchestra of the Staatstheater Nürnberg. Under the direction of first Kapellmeister Jan Croonenbroeck, the young musicians perform works such as the 1st Symphony by the Afro-American composer Florence Price in the opera house.

Masked and Unvarnished

How do we make MORE MUSIC? It's simple: The Nuremberg Music School will be taking to the Opera House stage with its string instruments, both small and large. In our freshly revived musical revue, many diverse ensembles will come together, and over 250 young musicians will perform music—in other words, MORE MUSIC.
