Helmut Lachenmann has written three works for string quartet – the pinnacle of chamber music, or as he himself calls it: a "good, old, venerable, and tradition-laden ensemble." Who could be better suited to break the traditional tonal and structural boundaries of this genre than the Swabian native – the relentless rebel among contemporary composers? To mark his 90th birthday, two friendly ensembles, Quatuor Diotima and Ensemble Resonanz, will perform all three string quartets, demonstrating in one evening the diverse paths Lachenmann has taken.

On the second day of "Derrick Gee's Radio Weekender," the Elbphilharmonie's Creator in Residence invites you to a colorful program that transforms the Kaispeicher into a pop-up marketplace. Visitors can browse through the record crates of "Honey Bucket Records" and, of course, purchase the records, enjoy coffee and cake, and experiment with modular synthesizers themselves. Experimental, Kurdish music by Hêja Netirk meets Franz Schubert sung by Julian Prégardien. Mais Harb's Arabic songs resound in a fresh string sound. Worlds between day and night, past and future, here and elsewhere. An evening of intoxication - with Mozart, Transylvanian cantatas, Kurdish traditions and an octave in 31 steps.

RKC chief conductor Justin Doyle has selected three compositions for the joint concert: James MacMillan's setting of the medieval sequence Stabat Mater, Maximilian Steinberg's "Passion Week" and the Chamber Symphony in C minor op. 110a by Dmitri Shostakovich. In his eighth string quartet, which forms the basis for this composition, Shostakovich looks back on his life musically: "I thought that after my death, no one would probably compose a work in my memory. So I decided to compose such a work myself."

With composer, arranger and pianist Tobias Schwencke, the Ensemble Resonanz meets a good friend who has already merged the sound worlds of Franz Schubert and Nick Cave for "mercy seat - winter journey". Now they are devoting themselves to a silent film classic: "The Merry Widow" by Erich von Stroheim. In 1925, the legendary director shot his free adaptation of Franz Léhar's operetta "The Merry Widow", which is now accompanied by Tobias Schwencke's newly composed film music.
