The university's origins trace back to the 19th century, beginning with the Birmingham Government School of Design in 1843, which evolved into the Birmingham College of Art. Over time, various institutions, including the Birmingham School of Music and Birmingham College of Commerce, merged to form The City of Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971.
