South Valley Symphony

Gilroy, CA, United States

The South Valley Symphony (SVS) is a cherished cultural institution dedicated to bringing classical music to the south Santa Clara and San Benito counties. With a mission to inspire and enrich the lives of community members through the power of music, SVS has a rich history of performance and community engagement. Founded with the vision of creating a symphony orchestra that would enhance the cultural landscape of the area, SVS has grown from a small ensemble to an orchestra that nearly realizes the vision of having 50-60 musicians, with a significant portion being string players. This growth has been, in part, due to the passionate support and tireless efforts of individuals like Al Navaroli and Bill Flodberg, both of whom have been instrumental in the development and success of the symphony. Bill Flodberg (1933-2009), a fervent advocate for the SVS, was involved in the symphony from its inception. He served as an active board member and was known for his fundraising acumen and innovative contributions to the organization. His love for music was paralleled by his passion for running, both of which he believed required skill, dedication, and perseverance. In recognition of his contributions, the SVS dedicated their October 2009 concert to him and established an Endowment Fund in his name to ensure the symphony's continued success. Al Navaroli (d. June 2008) was another pillar of the SVS community. Although he did not play an instrument or sing, his love for music was deeply ingrained, a legacy from his father's appreciation of Italian opera. After hearing the symphony perform in 1995, he became a staunch advocate for its growth, envisioning an orchestra with a strong string section that could deliver the complexity and strength of classical music. His efforts not only increased the orchestra's size but also enhanced its public exposure and financial stability. To honor his memory and commitment to fostering young talent, the SVS established The Al Navaroli Young Musicians Competition, aimed at highlighting the abilities of young musicians in the region. The SVS continues to thrive, offering a range of concerts for the 2022-2023 season under the guidance of its Music Director. The symphony also encourages community involvement through opportunities to join the orchestra, volunteer, and support its operations through donations. The Youth Competition is another avenue through which SVS engages with the community, promoting the development of young artists. The South Valley Symphony is located in Gilroy, California, and maintains an active online presence to keep its audience informed and engaged. Through its concerts, competitions, and educational initiatives, SVS remains a beacon of musical excellence and community spirit in the region.
