The South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), established in 1997 by Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso, has evolved into a prominent cultural institution serving South Florida, including Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe County. Initially founded as the Key West Symphony Orchestra, it debuted with a Masterwork concert in December 1998 at the Tennessee Williams Theatre. The organization is recognized as a Major Cultural Institution in Broward County and partners with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. SFSO is committed to symphonic music for underserved communities through its Symphony in the Schools program, which has reached over 50,000 students since inception. The orchestra champions contemporary composers, having premiered works by Ellen Zwilich and Tom Hormel, and collaborates with visual artists to enhance its cultural offerings. In 2009, the orchestra expanded its reach by relocating to Fort Lauderdale and rebranding as the South Florida Symphony Orchestra. Under the leadership of CEO Jacqueline Lorber, SFSO continues to grow, achieving significant milestones and engaging new audiences across the region.
