The second album from Sabrina Teitelbaum, aka Blondshell, borrows its title from a 1986 poem by the cherished American writer Mary Oliver, titled “Dogfish.” In the poem, Oliver grapples with the idea of telling one’s own story: how much to share, how much to keep for oneself — all questions Teitelbaum asked herself while writing If You Asked For A Picture. “There’s a part of the poem that says: I don’t need to tell you everything I’ve been through. It’s just another story of somebody trying to survive,” Teitelbaum says. “Something I love about songs is that you’re showing a snapshot of a person or a relationship, and showing a glimpse into a story can be just as important as trying to capture the entire thing. Sometimes it’s even truer to the entire picture than if you tried to write everything down.”

When he calls, Bob Mould is finishing work on his 15th solo album, Here We Go Crazy. A distillation of the unfailing melodic skill, the emotional lucidity and dynamic fluency he’s developed over more than four decades, it’s also a typically bold realignment of his sonic paradigm. Its turbulent vignettes are scored by Mould’s familiar bruised tunefulness, but the sound is pared back to its fundaments, 11 songs blistering past in just over 30 minutes. “I’ve stripped things back to what excited me as a young guitarist,” he explains. “The energy, the electricity.”

So said legendary West Coast player Snoop Dogg on the opening track of the Tuxedo’s sophomore album, Tuxedo II. The blessing of the Doggfather was of special importance to Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, solidifying them at the forefront of the new wave of boogie funk – one that owes as much to G-funk as P-funk. This is the territory of pre- and post-hydraulic lowriders: a mélange of Cali boom-bap, analog synth bass and elegant-funk that resonates with authenticity in an era where so many are faking it.

A cross-pollination of numerous influences, including cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, norteño, punk, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe, Colorado-based quartet DeVotchKa emerged as unlikely indie heroes in the mid-2000s. Along with bands like  and , they infused modern indie music with a global flavor, eventually finding widespread success in 2006 with their Grammy-nominated soundtrack to the hit indie film Little Miss Sunshine. Signing with  in 2008, they released their landmark fourth album, A Mad & Faithful Telling. Following the world tour in support of 2011’s cinematic 100 Lovers album, DeVotchKa entered a hiatus, regrouping for 2018’s This Night Falls Forever.

Lotus, innovators in blending electronic dance music with the jamband model of improvisation, have captivated audiences with their high-energy, dance-inducing shows and intrepid studio work. Drawing from genres such as psychedelic rock, krautrock, post-rock, disco, and funk, the four-piece band is known for their festival-favorite performances and intriguing songwriting, which seamlessly transitions from high-flying guitar solos to modular synth workouts, combining tightly composed songs with freeranging group improvisation.

In late May 2022, Dhruv Sharma reached a new nadir. Things had been going so well. He dipped out of Yale just two years into his degree, the music career he had been pursuing since he was a teenager in Singapore suddenly catalyzed by the runaway hit “double take,” as Dhruv. But at the start of 2022, he went to California for the first time, hoping to write his debut album with a slewof select songwriters there. Over five months, he participated in maybe eighty sessions, all abject failures. He felt both too guarded and exposed, the slickness of California and the machinery ofmusic overwhelming his once-insular process. He flew to New York without a single song, hoping a visit with an ex-boyfriend might pick him up. He was so nervous he scratched the stains from his hoody on the way to rendezvous. And that’s where he learned that his partner of two years had already moved on, that any possibility of redemption had vanished. He felt that his personal and professional lives were crumbling, that he’d been dropped into an episode of the worst sitcom ever without a clear exit.

Alternative R&B artist Gallant is known for a striking falsetto, heartfelt narratives, and a seemingly natural ability to adapt to any production style. The singer and songwriter made his full-length debut with the Grammy-nominated Ology (2016), and has since issued even more vulnerable and expressive projects such as Sweet Insomnia (2019), Neptune (2021), and Zinc. (2024). Between the latter two, he teamed with Terrace Martin to record a short, self-titled album under the name sneek.
