The Elgin Opera House, located in Elgin, Oregon, is a historic two-story Colonial Revival brick building with a stone foundation, designed by architect John L. Slater and completed in 1912 by contractor John Oberg. Originally constructed to replace a nearby house of ill repute, the building served dual functions as a city hall and a performing arts center. Its inaugural performance was by Elgin High School's graduating class of 1912, with a dedication ceremony featuring an oration by Walter M. Pierce, who later became the governor of Oregon. Renowned for its acoustics and slanted seating, the Opera House was equipped with plush draperies, box seats, an orchestra pit, and rococo decor. Recently renovated, it retains its original motif and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The venue is now home to the Friends of the Opera House, a performing arts group, and hosts a variety of community events, theatrical performances, and movie screenings throughout the year.
