Steppenwolf Theatre Company, founded in the mid-1970s by Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney, and Gary Sinise, began as a small ensemble performing in a church basement in Highland Park, Illinois. Over the past four decades, it has evolved into a leading ensemble theater in the United States, renowned for its innovative and groundbreaking productions. The ensemble has expanded to 49 members, including prominent actors, directors, and playwrights, and has received numerous accolades, including the National Medal of Arts and twelve Tony Awards. As a not-for-profit organization, Steppenwolf relies on community support to present up to 16 plays and nearly 700 performances annually across its three stages. The theater's artistic and educational programs attract a diverse audience of nearly 200,000 from the Chicago metropolitan area, with productions also touring nationally and internationally. Steppenwolf is committed to fostering inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, and its programming includes a seven-play season, a two-play Steppenwolf for Young Adults season, and the multidisciplinary LookOut series. The company's mission is to create thrilling, courageous, and provocative art that sparks curiosity, empathy, and joy in a thoughtful and inclusive environment.
