Founded in 2009 by Brad Wells, the ensemble was incubated at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, Massachusetts, where members studied with some of the world’s top performers and teachers and commissioned composers known for breaking molds. Through this work, they’ve learned the boundaries of the human voice are never what they seem—that rules can be bent, broken, and perhaps even should be.

For the ninth year of PIVOT, guest curator Gabriel Kahane and friends dig deep into music that asks enduring and enlightening questions about our ever-changing world and seeks the uplift of answers rooted in shared experience. Gabriel Kahane is a musician and storyteller whose work exists at the intersection of art and social practice, and “his music is suffused with idiosyncratic, enriched tonal harmony…he is one of the finest, most searching songwriters of the day” (The New Yorker). “We’re living in a golden age of string quartets…It’s hard to disagree when you hear the vibrant young players in New York’s Attacca Quartet” (NPR). Grammy-winning vocal band Roomful of Teeth can seemingly make anything cool, “From death metal to throat singing to alpine yodeling, the experimental group is changing what it means to harmonize” (The New Yorker).

Jaap van Zweden conducts Mozart’s Symphony No. 39. From the stately Adagio to intimate moments expressed by the mellow sound of clarinets (an instrument the composer loved!), it shows his mastery of the form. Plus a World Premiere by Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, part of <a>Project 19,</a> which features Roomful of Teeth (“a kind of lab experiment for the human voice” — The New Yorker).

CSO Creative Partner Matthias Pintscher conducts the Orchestra on this remarkable journey through time. Written during the pandemic, Olga Neuwirth’s kaleidoscopic Dreydl sparks a sense of motion, spinning incessantly without end. Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia bridges centuries of music, weaving past and present into a single, intellectually charged experience that includes a nod to Beethoven. The sheer virtuosity of the vocal band Roomful of Teeth adds a new dimension to the Berio experience. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, the Pastorale, returns us to the origin of this lineage, its serene landscapes and lyrical beauty providing a radiant conclusion.
