20 years ago, Lyric Opera of the North’s very first event featured scenes from Die Fledermaus. What better way to celebrate our anniversary than with a beautiful new production of this operetta that is an ode to bubbles, waltzes, masked balls, and shimmery melodies!

In honor of our upcoming production of Die Fledermaus, this year’s Soirée will be a waltzy, bubbly, masked affair. Don’t have a mask? We’ll have one ready for you. Don’t want to wear a mask? That’s fine, too. We love to see your face!
There’s no wrong way to Soirée. We look forward to seeing you for an evening of food, music, friends, and fundraising in support of the work of Lyric Opera of the North.

Valentine’s Day Soirée 2025

This opera tells the story of Nora, a woman having a very bad day. She seeks solace by locking herself inside her apartment and turning on the radio. Nora is played by a silent actress. The chorus represents the inner monologue of her life and the imaginative possibilities that await her.

Audiences can expect to hear a variety of musical styles, sounds and textures, from radio ads to big band to grand choral singing. The transformative power of voices singing together provides connection, hope, and the promise of joy – essential not just for the protagonist Nora, but everyone navigating modern life.

A Prince (T) regularly goes to the seashore to catch a glimpse of the little mermaid Rusalka (S). One day, he is entangled in a mass of kelp and Rusalka saves his life. The Creatures of the Coral Reef (SC) observe this and report to Rusalka’s father, the Sea King (B). The Spiny Urchins (SC) ask him to help his daughter.

Rusalka wants to turn into a human being so she can join the Prince on land. After dire warnings, the King explains the sea witch Jezibaba (M), can provide her with a magic potion. Rusalka goes to Jezibaba who makes the her promise that, if life on land doesn’t go well, Rusalka will return to serve her as a kelp slave. Rusalka agrees and Jezibaba gives her the potion. The witch mentions that there is a curse that goes with the transformation spell: the Prince will not be able to hear a word she says on land!
