If it’s December, it must be time for Opera Las Vegas’s annual Holiday on Broadway. An ensemble of some of the Valley’s top young singers will take audiences on a merry, fast-paced 60-minute journey through some of the best seasonal songs to be found in Broadway show scores. Old favorites will be featured along with new discoveries. And, as every year, there is a special ‘Vegas’ guest, with the arrival of “the King.” Free admission.

A beloved holiday classic, Amahl and the Night Visitors is a one-act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti that tells the touching story of a poor shepherd boy and his mother, whose humble lives are forever changed by a miraculous visit from the Three Kings on their way to Bethlehem. Commissioned as the first opera written for television in the United States, it has become a cherished tradition for audiences of all ages.

This Veteran's Day holiday weekend, Opera Las Vegas will sing the praises of all those who serve, with a varied 60-minute program ranging from light hearted Broadway fare (I'm in Love With a Soldier Boy, Over There, The Army's Made a Man Out of Me); and operetta (Modern Major General, Stouthearted Men); to selections from operatic "soldiers" in Carmen, Aida, and The Elixir of Love. The Youth Chorus will chime in with Faust's famous Soldier Chorus. The grand finale from The Chocolate Soldier, will sum up the the presiding sentiment of the concert: Hero Mine. Free admission.

Figaro and Susanna, servants in the household of Count Almaviva, are excited to be married—but their plans are threatened when the Count, bored with his own marriage, sets his sights on Susanna. With the help of some smart friends (and a few disguises), Figaro and Susanna set out to outwit the Count and prove that love, loyalty, and honesty can win the day.

Set aboard the British ship HMS Pinafore, this delightful operetta tells the tale of Ralph Rackstraw, a lowly sailor, who falls in love with the captain's daughter, Josephine. Despite the social divide, Ralph's determined pursuit of Josephine's heart faces obstacles from her father, Captain Corcoran, who has other matrimonial plans for her involving the pompous Sir Joseph Porter. With a cast of colorful characters, charming songs, and a series of surprising revelations, this witty and satirical story navigates themes of love, duty, and social class, ultimately leading to a joyous and unexpected resolution where love conquers all.

Giuseppe Verdi was a noted Italian composer of operas. To say that it is an understatement is itself... an understatement! Verdi produced some of the finest lyric theatre pieces in the history of opera, and this program will offer a "greatest hits" parade of world famous selections from Rigoletto, La Traviata, Il trovatore, Falstaff, and more!

Now in its second year after a tremendously successful 2024 premiere, our unique partnership for Celebración Latina - A Mariachi Fiesta will find OLV collaborating with the College of Southern Nevada's Award-winning Mariachi Plata for a festive presentation of traditional music and Zarzuela (Spanish operetta), mingled with unique recent lyric theatre compositions and bi-lingual narration, starring soprano Cecilia Violetta López, baritone Octavio Moreno, and pianist Nathan Salazar.

Originally set in the charming ambiance of 19th century Spain, we are re-imaging this iconic comedy in current-day Hollywood, where pop princess Rosina is fresh out of rehab after a messy breakup and public meltdown. She’s moved in with her overbearing producer and manager, Dr. Bartolo, who has more than her career on his mind. With the assistance of aging rock legend, turned celebrity voice coach, Don Basilio, Bartolo hopes to marry the young Rosina. However, Hollywood heartthrob Count Almaviva also has his eye on Rosina but wants to win her heart the old-fashioned way, not because of his fame, so he disguises himself as a humble student to approach her. Figaro, a stylist to the stars, and a man-about-town is on the scene to aid with the love connection. A host of personal assistants, housekeepers, out-of-work actors, and even the LAPD show up in this laugh-a-minute comedy.

The Barber of Seville

Again and Again and Again is a comic chamber opera in one act based somewhat on Pierre Corneille’s classic meta-theatrical fantasy L’Illusion Comique and traces a father’s search for his son across four centuries. In rural France in 1789, Pridament, nearing the end of his life, visits the cave of the sorcerer Alcandra and asks him to help find his estranged son Clément who ran away from him ten years before. Alcandra agrees to show Pridament three visions that will explain his son’s whereabouts under the condition that he does not disrupt the visions in any way. The first vision shows Clément in an antic romance with Isabel that is not approved by her father Geronte. The second vision leaps ahead in time to 1987 when Clément is involved in a domestic dispute in a penthouse and is shot and killed. Pridament is grief-stricken, but Alcandra then reveals that Clément is an actor; that the first vision was of a Commedia Dell’Arte comedy in which he was performing and that the second is of an evening soap opera he was filming. In the third and final vision, Alcandra shows Clément in the present day. He has given up his life as an actor and now lives on a goat farm in Vermont with his husband and child. In an opera about the power of love to transcend time, father and son are finally reunited.

Wine and song go together so naturally that Opera Las Vegas is going to merrily serve up both along with a sumptuous meal, at Opera Uncorked on Tuesday, 10 September at Monzú Italian Oven + Bar, at 5:30 pm.

Patrons at this mini-gala can expect to be treated to timeless tunes paired with exquisite wines and Chef Gio's delectable full course repast, as OLV’s full-throated troubadors lead a musical toast with some of the most celebrated drinking songs and party scenes in all of Operadom. Three outstanding vocalists also promise to regale attendees with a few more ‘sobering’ world-famous arias and duets that figure prominently on the opera hit parade.
