Opera Vermont's 2025 Season: Unveiling Timeless Stories and Rediscovered Classics

Opera Vermont is thrilled to announce an exciting new production of Pagliacci, a bold fusion of two operatic masterpieces—Ruggero Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci and Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana—presented on February 21st and 22nd, 2025, at the Highland Center for the Arts in Greensboro, Vermont.
 

In an extraordinary synthesis, Artistic Director Joshua Collier brings together the powerful drama of opera with the dazzling artistry of the circus. Joining Opera Vermont’s exceptional cast of singers are professional performers from Circus Smirkus and the New England Circus Academy. On November 15 & 16, 2024, the world premiere of Truman and Nancy, a captivating and poignant one-act opera by renowned composer William Zeffiro, will take the stage at the BARN OPERA House in Brandon, Vermont. Based on the graphic novel Capote in Kansas by Ande Parks, this lyrical and thought-provoking work brings to life the haunting journey of Truman Capote as he grapples with his magnum opus, In Cold Blood, and is confronted by the spirit of Nancy Clutter, one of the murder victims immortalized in his groundbreaking true crime novel.

A Night at the Opera

Scilla Cristiano, hailed as one of Italy's most luminous vocal talents, brings her radiant voice and dramatic artistry to the role of Violetta, the tragic heroine whose story of love, sacrifice, and redemption has captivated audiences around the world for generations. La Traviata tells the poignant tale of Violetta, a Parisian courtesan who falls deeply in love with the noble Alfredo Germont. Their romance is tested by societal judgment and the demands of Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, who pressures Violetta to renounce her love for the sake of his family’s honor. As misunderstandings and illness take their toll, Violetta’s ultimate sacrifice leads to one of opera’s most heartrending conclusions.

It is so rare to find music that was written 100 years ago, but that no one living has ever heard! This double-bill is just that. Opera Vermont is thrilled to present this performance with a fairly known piece by one of opera’s greatest composers, partnered with an unknown, unheard of piece by a composer whose composition won against that of Puccini!  
La Fata del Nord is a composition by Zuelli that was submitted alongside Le Villi by Puccini for the Sonsogno publisher’s competition. Puccini’s composition won second place, and La Fata del Nord took home the prize. Ironically, the only time that it was performed was at the prize concert of the May 4, 1884 competition. The opera, written for piano and voices, was lost to time, but Artistic Director Joshua Collier’s friend and collaborator Marco Attura, found the clothbound score in an antique store in Italy.

Set in a village in the bayou of mississippi, a bayou legend focuses on the deadly revenge that Clothilde enacts on Bazile who does not return her expressions of love. When Clothilde discovers that Bazile has been in communication with Aurore, a spirit of the bayou, who identifies herself as Bazile's lover from a former life, Clothilde threatens to have Bazile arrested for violating local religious customs. When Bazile continues to refuse to wed Clothilde, she arranges for an angry mob to have him lynched.
 In his death throes, however, Bazile's soul is at last united with Aurore, showing that love transcends time and space, while Clothilde lives out the remainder of her years as a bitter recluse.
This beautiful, lyrical, emotional piece examines the human condition as it grapples with both earthly and celestial concepts, as well as probing the nature of how far we are willing to go to achieve our desired result - and the consequences of those actions.
