The Sequoia Symphony Orchestra is a distinguished musical organization that has been committed to delivering high-quality performances, community service, and organizational excellence. The symphony is known for its dedication to fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of music across all ages through educational initiatives. Guided by a set of core values, the Sequoia Symphony Orchestra is driven by a passion for music, striving to bring energy, vitality, and a sense of pride to its work. The organization actively engages with the community, involving local artists and volunteers in its efforts to shape the future of classical music and its broader impact on society. Innovation is at the heart of the symphony's approach, as it embraces change, experiments with new practices, and aims to shape the future of classical music. Financial responsibility is also a cornerstone of the organization, with a focus on generating and stewarding programs and resources to meet the needs of both current and future generations. The symphony's Board of Directors, led by President Jennifer Fultz, includes a diverse group of individuals committed to the organization's mission and vision. Music Director Bruce Kiesling has been at the helm of the orchestra since 2009, bringing with him a national profile as a conductor and music educator. His tenure has been marked by balanced budgets, dramatic increases in ticket sales, including multiple sold-out performances, and a budget that has more than doubled. Kiesling's pre-concert talks and insider stories have become a popular feature for the audience. Under his leadership, the orchestra's artistic profile has expanded, performing complex works such as all of Stravinsky's ballets, several Mahler symphonies, and complete cycles of Tchaikovsky and Beethoven symphonies. Bruce Kiesling holds graduate degrees from the University of Michigan, the University of Miami, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His extensive experience includes guest conducting for various symphonies and orchestras across the nation, as well as serving as the Music Director of the Adrian Symphony in Michigan, and the Artistic Director and Conductor of the School of Orchestral Studies at the NY Summer School of the Arts. Additionally, he conducts the university orchestra and opera at the University of California Santa Cruz. The Sequoia Symphony Orchestra continues to uphold its commitment to excellence, passion, education, engagement, innovation, and financial responsibility, making it a vital and vibrant part of the cultural landscape.
