Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (AFIPO) is an organization dedicated to supporting the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO), a globally recognized symphonic ensemble founded in 1936 by Bronislaw Huberman. The IPO was established to rescue Jewish musicians from Europe during the Holocaust, and its inaugural concert was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. The IPO has since become Israel's leading orchestra and a prominent cultural ambassador, performing internationally and collaborating with renowned artists. AFIPO was formally established in 1980 to enhance the orchestra's reach through financial support for tours and educational programs. The organization has played a crucial role in the IPO's development, helping it maintain its status in the classical music world. Notable milestones include the IPO's performance at Israel's Declaration of Independence ceremony in 1948 and its first U.S. tour in 1951. Zubin Mehta, who served as Music Director for Life, significantly contributed to the orchestra's legacy, succeeded by Lahav Shani in the 2020-2021 season. AFIPO continues to foster engagement and support for the IPO, ensuring its enduring impact on global audiences.
