The Carmel Music Society is a distinguished non-profit arts organization based in Carmel, California, with a storied history that extends back to the early 1920s. Founded by Dene Denny and Hazel Watrous, who were architects and decorators by profession, the society was established to enrich the cultural landscape of the Monterey Peninsula through classical music. Prior to its inception, the area experienced sporadic classical music performances by local amateurs and professionals, as well as infrequent concerts by touring professionals, which were usually sponsored by metropolitan booking agents and supported by affluent patrons.\n\nDespite previous attempts by local groups, a consistent concert series with a reliable schedule, venue, and level of artistry had not been successfully organized. Dene and Hazel took the initiative by hosting a series of concerts and events in 1925 and 1926, both in their home on North Dolores Street and in the original Golden Bough Theatre located at the corner of Ocean Avenue and Monte Verde. These early events were well-received, and in the fall of 1927, the two women collaborated with other local music enthusiasts to formally establish the Carmel Music Society. The society aimed to bring the most exceptional classical music talents to the community of Carmel.\n\nIncorporated in 1927, the Carmel Music Society holds the distinction of being the oldest non-profit arts organization in California. It has a remarkable legacy of presenting over 500 major artists and ensembles from around the globe across its 94 seasons. The society also played a pivotal role as a co-sponsor of the inaugural Carmel Bach Festival in 1935, further cementing its influence in the region's classical music scene.\n\nThe society's board of directors, led by President Peter Thorp, along with Vice Presidents Victoria Davis and James Neiman, and other members, continues to uphold the vision of its founders. The organization's operations are supported by a dedicated staff, including Piano Technician John Bauer, Accountant Elizabeth Bates, and Print Designer Tracy Hopper, with David Gordon serving as the Webmaster.\n\nIn 2014, the society's history was chronicled in \"Carmel Impresarios,\" a comprehensive biography of the Denny-Watrous partnership written by musician and author David Gordon. This 400-page book details a century of history and includes nearly 300 vintage illustrations.\n\nThe Carmel Music Society's concerts are currently held at the Sunset Center in Carmel, just a short walk from Ocean Avenue. The society invites classical music aficionados to join their mailing list, send messages, and explore their extensive 94-season performance history through their website.
