The '''Los Angeles Youth Orchestra''' (LAYO) is a prominent youth orchestra based in Los Angeles, California, dedicated to fostering musical education and performance among young musicians. Founded in 1999, the orchestra has grown from its initial Jewish community roots to embrace a diverse range of students from across the Los Angeles area, reflecting the multicultural tapestry of the region. ===History=== LAYO began as the '''Los Angeles Jewish Youth Orchestra''' on a semester grant from the Jewish Community Foundation. It was initially based at Milken Community High School of the Stephen Wise Temple and conducted by composer Russell Steinberg, who was the newly appointed Director of Music for the Stephen Wise Schools. The orchestra expanded its repertoire beyond Jewish music, prompting a name change to the '''Stephen Wise Youth Orchestra''' and eventually to its current name to better represent its diverse membership. Over the years, the orchestra has benefited from collaborations with established musical entities such as the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. These partnerships have provided invaluable experiences for the young musicians, including the chance to perform at prestigious venues like the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In 2008, LAYO achieved non-profit 501(c)(3) status, further cementing its commitment to musical education and community engagement. The orchestra has also been involved in various tours, including a notable performance at Carnegie Hall in 2013, and its first international tour to Vienna and Prague in 2015. The LAYO has faced challenges, such as venue changes, but has always found ways to continue its mission. The Encino Community Center has been its home since 2014, providing a stable environment for rehearsals and performances. ===Mission=== The mission of the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra is to contribute to the cultural community and advance the future of culture by nurturing a lifelong passion for music in young musicians. Through the study and performance of classical and contemporary music, LAYO aims to develop not only musical skills but also the personal growth of its members. ===Ensembles and Programs=== LAYO comprises several ensembles that cater to different skill levels, including the newly named Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra for intermediate-level musicians. The organization also encourages chamber music and has initiated programs like Viola Boot Camp and the Laemmle Live Concert Series to further enrich its students' musical experiences. ===Notable Alumni=== Many LAYO alumni have
