Warwick Valley Chorale (WVC) is a distinguished choral group with a rich history that traces its origins to the Warwick Summer Chorale, established on June 18, 1940, by Kate Fowler Chase, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Federation of Music Clubs. The chorale's inaugural concert took place on November 28, 1941, with a group of 16 women. In August 1947, the Warwick Summer Chorale was documented in a photograph that encapsulates the essence of its early years. In September 1946, the Queen Village Glee Club was formed under the direction of Reverend John Lennon, Minister of the Warwick Methodist Church. The Glee Club's first Christmas concert, featuring 20 male singers, was held in December of that year, setting a precedent for seasonal performances. A significant milestone occurred in December 1948 when Reverend Irving Decker of the Warwick Reformed Church brought the two separate groups together for the first Community Christmas Candlelight Service. Although the groups continued to perform independently, they united in 1970 for a single concert, each led by its respective director and accompanist. The collaboration evolved, and by 1979, the groups formally merged to become the Warwick Valley Chorale, now recognized as the oldest active singing group in Orange County. In the 2009-2010 season, the chorale celebrated its 69th anniversary, marking a period of growth and community engagement. The chorale served as the Chorus in Residence for the Warwick Music Festival for five years and has performed at numerous local events and dedications, contributing to the cultural fabric of the region. The Warwick Valley Chorale has not only been a staple of local culture but has also extended its reach to other communities. The chorale has backed Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, performed at the United States Military Academy at West Point, and participated in over a dozen concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Additionally, the chorale has honored the victims of the September 11 attacks with performances at the Voices of Hope concert in Philadelphia. Internationally, the WVC has expanded its presence with members performing abroad in various locations, including Czechoslovakia, Spain, Australia, China, Greece, and Vienna, Austria, through collaborations with the Jonathan Griffith Singers and MidAm International. The chorale's membership is diverse, comprising men and women from high school students to senior citizens, and is open to new members. Under the direction of Stanley Curtis, retired Associate Professor of Music at Orange County Community College since 1986, and with Gail Johnson as the accompanist since 1992, the Warwick Valley Chorale presents at least two concerts annually, in the fall and spring. Throughout its history, the Warwick Valley Chorale has celebrated numerous milestones, including a memorable 75th anniversary year in 2016. The chorale's commitment to musical excellence and community service continues to this day, sustained by the enthusiasm and voluntary support of its members and the community for over 78 years.
