A Symphony of Traditions: Basel Chamber Orchestra's Centennial Celebration

On the occasion of its centenary (it was founded in 1926 by the Swiss conductor, patron, and industrialist Paul Sacher), the prestigious Basel Chamber Orchestra is making its first stop in Liège. A major interpreter of Viennese classicism, it will perform Mozart's Symphony No. 31 , written at the age of 22 in Paris, as well as his emblematic "Turkish" Concerto, with South American violinist Bomsori Kim, a new star on the Deutsche Grammophon label. True to its history of interpreting contemporary works (having premiered pieces by Bartók, Stravinsky, and Honegger), the Orchestra will perform the new work of American composer Mike Svoboda.

He was said to be brittle, sensuous, didactic, neoclassical. We still encounter prejudices against Hindemith. Why? When his music is accessible and honest, challenging, full of joy and dynamism. It was probably National Socialism, with its accusation of left-wing cultural Bolshevism, that has permanently damaged Hindemith to this day and ensures that he continues to be under-recognized in concert life. We're putting that to rest, once and for all! And present the versatile, tragic, serious, and humorous Hindemith. He is so much more than a prelude to the incredible Franz Schubert: an hour of C major.

He was not yet 15 years old when Mendelssohn Bartholdy was already able to present twelve short so-called string symphonies. They were already far more than compositional finger exercises and caused open-mouthed performances at the distinguished concerts in his parents' garden hall (with professional musicians from the royal court orchestra!). And then Bach: musical demands on the performer? Oh yes! Precision, logical phrasing, teamwork, and a soaring sound. Perfectly suited to Vilde Frang. And his popularity among the audience? Ten!
