Hardly any other Baroque opera has recently gained as much popularity as »Dido and Aeneas« (1689). This entertaining and deeply moving work was penned by the congenial English composer Henry Purcell. The tear-jerking lament »When I am laid« has become famous – the climax of a tragic love affair between the Carthaginian princess Dido and the Trojan prince Aeneas. But a magical world, cunning witches and a hunting society also invite you to enjoy listening and smiling.

The Baroque Festival in the DomQuartier is back! The highlight is the concert performance of L'Orfeo in the Carabinieri Hall—the original venue for the first opera performance outside Italy (1614)—and thus the perfect setting for the long-awaited new edition of the Baroque Festival. Between the two parts of the opera, you can expect baroque dance, a banquet, fine dining, historical parlor games, madrigals from the time of Markus Sittikus, as well as selected promenade concerts and musical rarities. The Lautten Compagney Berlin, the Collegium Vocale Salzburg, and the Monteverdichor Hamburg, under the direction of Antonius Adamske, bring Monteverdi's masterpiece to life at this historic venue.

What an unusual start to the season for the Hamburg Association of Friends of Chamber Music: instead of instruments, the human voice will take centre stage at this magnificent festival. The »Instrument of the Year 2025« will be celebrated! Top representatives of the soprano, baritone, a capella and large choir genres have been invited. There will also be instrumental accompaniment from an accomplished piano accompanist and – essential after all – a renowned piano trio of international standing. They present a unique evening of heart-warming lieder, artistic duets, Beethoven’s and Schubert’s chamber music with voice, plus marvellous a capella contributions from the Baltic region and Brahms’ choral music, which flows so wonderfully.
