The satirical epic poem "La Divina Commedia" ("The Divine Comedy") is considered one of the most important works of world literature and served as a source of inspiration for Liszt's symphony. Dante Alighieri's journey through hell and purgatory tells of good and evil, of corrupt politicians and dishonorable popes, and shows us Franz Liszt as an incredibly modern and forward-looking composer. Fifteen years ago, with the recording and release of the Dante Symphony, Martin Haselböck and his Vienna Academy embarked on an epochal undertaking: recording all of Franz Liszt's orchestral works in the so-called "Sound of Weimar" on period instruments in Raiding. The project has been completed, and the international press response has been enormous and overwhelming. Together with the Vienna Chormädchen, this performance promises to be a unique experience.

The folk songs that Franz Liszt heard during his childhood in Raiding, then part of Hungary, remained with him throughout his life. They also provided the melodic material for the Hungarian Melodies and the "Magyar Rhapsodiak" for piano, which he composed during a brief return to Pest in the winter of 1839/40. It was only 13 years later that he published 19 of the results of these national studies in what he himself called "a handsomely comprehensive volume of Hungarian rhapsodies." The composer, flautist, and conductor Franz Doppler, whom Liszt had met in Weimar in 1854, arranged six of these rhapsodies for orchestra, and Martin Haselböck, with his Vienna Academy, would bring all the colors of this dazzling orchestration to life. In his Hungarian Rhapsodies, Liszt created a stirring monument to the Hungarian people's longing for freedom. Like the Roma of Hungary, he saw himself as a homeless person, but at the same time as a European who intervened, commented critically, and simultaneously moved and built new things. As sharp-tongued as ever, Heinrich Heine remarked: "It goes without saying that such a restless mind, driven into confusion by all the needs and doctrines of the age, that feels the need to concern itself with all the needs of humanity and likes to poke its nose into all the pots in which God is cooking up the future, that Franz Liszt cannot be a quiet pianist for quiet citizens and comfortable sleepyheads."

"More light!" – these were supposedly the last words of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, on whose two-part tragedy Faust Franz Liszt's Faust Symphony , premiered in 1857 on the occasion of the erection of the Goethe-Schiller Monument in Weimar , is based. The three character portraits of the composition for orchestra, tenor, and male choir are each dedicated to one of the drama's three main characters: Faust, Gretchen, and Mephistopheles.

This workshop will explore Schoenberg's exploration of the organ and its difficult-to-capture sounds, the aesthetic discrepancy between the sound of the organ works and Schoenberg's Bach arrangements for orchestra, and the general challenges composers face in capturing the desired sounds and pitches in notation.

The contradictory social situation of the artist, the elusiveness of success, the workings of creative inspiration or the responsibility of the genius are general artistic and aesthetic problems that essentially defined Ferenc Liszt’s thinking. Lament and Triumph, which ponders the tragic fate of the Baroque poet Tasso, and The Ideals, his resigned reflection on his own artistic situation, are symphonic poems that reveal Liszt’s creative dilemmas with the sharpness of an X-ray machine.
