A Harmonious Celebration: Chamber Music at the University of Louisville

The Chamber Music Society of Louisville is gearing up for an extraordinary season with three electrifying performances by internationally acclaimed ensembles: the Merz Trio, the American Brass Quintet, and the adventurous Momenta Quartet. These concerts promise a medley of musical interpretations, from Beethoven's and Dvořák’s beloved trios to an array of brass compositions and fresh contemporary works. Held at the University of Louisville, these events are set to invigorate the local art scene and captivate audiences with their unique sounds and artistic flair.

A Season of Chamber Music Mastery: Merz Trio, American Brass Quintet, and Momenta Quartet Shine in Louisville

One of the most exciting piano trios on the international stage, the Merz Trio brings their creative approach to chamber music with a dynamic program. The concert begins with Beethoven’s Trio No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 1, followed by a set of short works curated by the ensemble. The concert concludes with Dvořák’s passionate Trio No. 3 in F Minor, Op. 65.

This unique ensemble of flute, viola, and harp presents a program centered around Debussy’s exquisite Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp, a masterpiece of color and texture. The program will explore a range of works that showcase the trio’s signature blend of impressionistic and contemporary influences.

The Debussy Trio

The renowned Jerusalem Quartet opens our season with a masterful program spanning three centuries of string quartet repertoire. The concert features Haydn’s Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 76, No. 4, Shostakovich’s deeply expressive Quartet No. 7 in F-Sharp Minor, Op. 108, and Beethoven’s monumental Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 130, culminating in the powerful Grosse Fuge, Op. 133.

Jerusalem Quartet

One of the finest contemporary Scandinavian quartets will perform a program of 18th, 19th, and 20th Century works by Haydn (Quartet in G Minor, Op. 20 no 3), Stravinsky (Three Pieces for String Quartet), Turlough O’Carolan (Three Melodies), Mozart (Divertimento in F Major, K. 138 in its string quartet arrangement), and Schubert (Quartet No. 15 in G Major, D. 887).

Danish String Quartet

This concert honors the American chamber music tradition, with music performed by the touring ensemble affiliated with Copland House.   Features piano trios by Aaron Copland (Vitebsk) and Leonard Bernstein, and short works by Joan Tower (Petroushkates), Shawn Okpebholo (Harlem Dance Hall: The Savoy) and Viet Cuong.

Copland House Ensemble

Recognized as one of the world’s premier brass ensembles, the American Brass Quintet will present a vibrant program of chamber music for two trumpets, horn, trombone, and bass trombone. Their program highlights the expressive and virtuosic possibilities of brass instruments across different musical styles and eras.

American Brass Quintet

The season concludes with the adventurous and acclaimed Momenta Quartet. Their program includes Haydn’s Quartet in G Major, Op. 54, No. 1, a newly commissioned work written for the ensemble, and Ravel’s luminous and emotionally rich Quartet in F Major.
