In “Requiem for Water,” Chorus Niagara highlights the global water crisis and expresses humanity’s desperation for this precious resource. At the heart of this program is Reena Esmail’s Malhaar: A Requiem for Water (2023), which fuses Western choral music with Hindustani classical traditions, featuring a Hindustani vocalist, tabla, percussion, and immersive video projections. Paired with other contemporary works that echo its themes, this concert is a moving meditation on the natural world and our place within it.

Handel’s Messiah returns in all its glory with a spritely and festive performance that breathes fresh life into this beloved masterpiece. Under the direction of new Aartistic Ddirector Kathleen Allan, this interpretation draws on historically-informed performance practice. Vibrant pacing reveals the drama, intimacy, and exultation of this seasonal favourite. 

Handel's Messia

Mozart’s Requiem forms the centrepiece of our season opener, our first concert under the baton of Artistic Director Kathleen Allan. In the completion by Robert Levin, we explore the mysterious history of the Requiem while presenting a performance that features the beloved moments the piece is known for. In the first half, Brahms’ Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), sometimes referred to as the “Little Requiem,” highlights the struggle of humankind with a fearless optimism. The concert opens with the world premiere of a new arrangement by Leslee Heys of her composition, All Shall Be Well, a meditative affirmation of resilience.

Music that reaches for the transcendent, from ancient yearning to contemporary reflections. The program features the world premiere of Wanuskewin by Andrew Balfour—a powerful reflection on peace of mind and spiritual searching. Tarik O’Regan’s luminous Triptych blends rhythmic energy with contemplative beauty. Our concert culminates in Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs, bringing the poetry of George Herbert to life in a deeply expressive setting for baritone, choir, and strings. Performed with strings and piano, this is a concert of rich harmonies, driving rhythms, and spiritual revelation.
