At a moment when musical streams are crossing with unprecedented frequency, it’s crucial to remember that throughout its history, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge, mingle, and resurface, transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 60 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history.

PHJB marches that tradition forward once again on So It Is. The album redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, and forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport, including legends like Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead and modern giants like Beck, The Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, and the Black Keys.

People from around the globe make pilgrimages to it, and now its ambassadors, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, are embarking on a pilgrimage of their own: a nationwide tour to celebrate their 60th anniversary.

They return to their West Coast homec accompanied by special guest vocalist Tarriona "Tank" Ball and multi-instrumentalist Norman Spence II of the GRAMMY-nominated soul group Tank and The Bangas.

From the heart of the French Quarter to the world’s stage, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has spread the joyful, timeless spirit of true New Orleans jazz since 1961. The band has featured a long cadre of legendary musicians over the years and issued a number of albums, all of which showcase the group’s rootsy, soulful brand of traditional New Orleans jazz. While standards and traditional New Orleans jazz repertoire remain their core focus, they’ve transformed into a vibrantly cross-pollinated ambassador for New Orleans, exploring original compositions, Afro-Cuban rhythms, R&B influences, and collaborating with artists beyond the jazz spectrum. The Preservation Jazz Band is now embarking on the nationwide tour Pass It On – 60th Anniversary Musical Celebration, commemorating six decades of the Hall’s well-worn, well-loved space that’s physically small, but spiritually huge. The band’s mission remains focused on initiating audiences into the ineffable, almost religious experience of channeling their ancestors through the music and culture they’ve inherited from them.
