This spring tradition now enters its eighth season, presenting three new concerts in the Grünewald Hall – three distinct encounters in which Lundgren brings together musicians from various backgrounds and generations.

Since 2016, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has hosted an ”Orchestra Academy”. The international RSPO Orchestra Academy is a one-year, advanced academic programme for young musicians. Under the guidance of the section leaders from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Piteå School of Music, the musicians receive intensive training individually, in chamber music, and orchestral playing.

The award-winning Simply Quartet made its debut at Konserthuset Stockholm in 2022 as one of the ECHO Rising Stars of the 2021/22 season. Founded in Shanghai in 2008, the quartet is now primarily based in Europe, with performances at venues such as Wigmore Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

In Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 131, the music seems to be searching for freedom – of thought, of the soul. Perhaps that is why it speaks so powerfully to us, with its warmth, imagination and intensity. One of the works from Beethoven’s late period, the quartet spans seven movements and covers an extraordinary emotional range. Franz Schubert heard the piece and is said to have wondered what was left to write after music of such magnitude – a greatness that could not be put into words.

The ensemble Lipparella constantly initiates new collaborations to explore the intersection between the sound world of Baroque instruments and the musical language of our own time. The group often works with singers and instrumentalists in various projects. At this concert, the focus is on the vocal, with soprano Alexandra Büchel – one of Sweden’s leading interpreters of contemporary music – as soloist.

A major turning point came in 2019 when he won the prestigious Vigo International Piano Competition – with legendary pianist Martha Argerich as jury chair. Hungarian musician Áron Horváth began playing his country’s national instrument – the cimbalom – at the age of seven. He initially performed traditional Hungarian folk music, but over the years has broadened his scope to include both classical and jazz. In 2023, he was admitted to the prestigious Liszt Academy in Budapest to study classical cimbalom, and in the same year became a member of two prominent ensembles: Elán, which explores the folk music of Central and Eastern Europe, and Intergeese, a jazz trio performing original compositions.

At this concert, we meet two rising Swedish stars poised to make their mark both nationally and internationally: soprano Matilda Sterby and mezzo-soprano Rebecka Wallroth (younger sister of soprano Johanna Wallroth).

“There is something exquisite about the construction of a common orange,” says American violinist, singer and composer Caroline Shaw (born 1982). One of the most common varieties is the Valencia orange – juicy, sweet, and with a thin peel. “Nature is so simple, and yet so extraordinary.” In her piece Valencia, the image of an orange is evoked through gently undulating overtones and slowly flowing chords and melodies.

South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son has been forced to cancel, due to personal reasons, and is replaced by the Russian-born pianist Anna Vinnitskaya. Based in Hamburg, Vinnitskaya is a professor of piano at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. The Washington Post has hailed her as a true “piano lion”, and Gramophone Magazine describes her playing as unforgettable.

For the Lied Concert series, pianist Magnus Svensson invites an exclusive group of artists from the world’s opera and concert stages, offering audiences the opportunity to experience their vocal artistry in the intimate setting of the Grünewald Hall. In this concert, we hear British tenor Robin Tritschler, admired for his radiant, clear voice and his ability to illuminate the meaning of the texts he performs.

American composer Jessie Montgomery (born 1981) draws inspiration from jazz, hip hop and rock – all natural parts of life growing up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. She wrote Duo for Violin and Cello for one of her close friends. The piece is intended as a tribute to friendship, with the various movements portraying the bonds that connect people: laughter, compassion, adventure – and sometimes a bit of silliness.

American pianist Emmet Cohen has been described as a prodigy and is one of today’s leading young jazz artists. DownBeat magazine has praised his “lightning-fast touch and warm harmonic vocabulary.” Others have called him the greatest jazz piano talent to emerge in decades – with a virtuosity that has led some to name him the foremost heir to Oscar Peterson.

Monday at Last is the concert series where Cecilia Zilliacus and Kati Raitinen invite guest artists to join them in presenting both newer and older music. This time, the Monday guests are cellist Soo-Kyung Hong, violinist Marcus Bäckerud, violist Ami-Louise Johnsson, and Valur Pálsson doubble bass (Soo-Kyung Hong replaces the previously announced Andreas Brantelid.)

The atmospheric and deeply spiritual music of Arvo Pärt has made him one of the world’s most performed and beloved composers. Alfred Schnittke, meanwhile, saw himself as a musical link to Mozart, Schubert, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. This concert features works by both composers – music rich in emotional intensity. Arvo Pärt turns 90 this year (on 11 September).

Orpheus Baroque Stockholm is made up primarily of members of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In less than a decade, the ensemble has become a dynamic and creative meeting point – not only for Philharmonic musicians with expertise in early music, but also for many of Sweden’s leading baroque performers. Artistic directors are Johannes Rostamo, principal cellist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and lutenist Jonas Nordberg.

This quote inspired American composer Gabriella Smith to write her Carrot Revolution – “a tribute to the ability to find new ways of approaching older artistic forms and expressions, such as the string quartet, a 250-year-old genre.”

It is encouraging to see composers such as Irish Joan Trimble (1915–2000) and French Cécile Chaminade (1857–1944) now receiving the attention in concert programmes that their music truly deserves. Trimble’s music has likely never before been performed at Konserthuset Stockholm.

Julia Sporsén is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed sopranos today. She was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet Opera Prize in 2023 for her portrayal of the title role in Bellini’s Norma at Folkoperan, with the jury stating: “In the service of artistic expression, she tests all boundaries with beautiful sensitivity and complete vocal mastery.” Equally praised was her performance as Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello at the Gothenburg Opera last season.

Swedish composer Jenny Hettne often creates her music in close collaboration with musicians and is known for her imaginative approach to drawing out new sounds from traditional instruments. Her new work is titled Mycorrhizal Network – a reference to the symbiotic relationship between fungal mycelium and the roots of plants!

A chamber music concert for adults with babies aged 0–12 months. This half hour of music is adapted to suit adult tastes and babies’ hearing. Gentle and soft, with plenty of space in the auditorium. Beethoven wrote sixteen string quartets, composed in three distinct phases over the course of his life. Each phase marked a remarkable leap forward in the art of the string quartet. One of the most celebrated of these is the multifaceted and profound Opus 130, from his late period – a work filled with beloved melodies, striking harmonies and passionate outbursts. It is performed here by the French ensemble Quatuor Diotima, who take on this truly grand and monumental quartet.

When Jean Sibelius was working on his intensely beautiful and dramatic Fifth Symphony, he already sensed he was creating something remarkable. “I’ve received a wonderful theme,” he noted in his diary. The inspiration came from seeing sixteen swans in flight – a moment that gave rise to the magnificent theme of the symphony’s final movement. “One of the great experiences of my life! My God, what beauty.”

Her major breakthrough came in 2003, when she stepped in at short notice to replace Cecilia Bartoli at a concert in Zurich. She has been honoured with the Litteris et Artibus medal (2017) and the Opera magazine award (2019), and was appointed Court Singer in 2021.

This soup concert offers three tasteful pieces for various woodwind instruments and piano. Clara Schumann’s Romances for clarinet and piano are filled with melancholy, warmth and intensity. Originally composed for violin and piano, they were dedicated to the legendary violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom Clara frequently performed.

Pianist Martin Sturfält is a frequent guest at Konserthuset Stockholm as a chamber musician, and has also appeared several times as a soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In this soup concert, he takes the stage together with a string quartet of orchestra members.
