This series features accomplished musicians and composers from the Twin Cities and surrounding area, as well as occasional musical newcomers to the area. Soprano Golda Schultz is among the world’s most celebrated opera singers. For her International Artist Series debut, she will collaborate with her regular pianist partner Jonathan Ware in this revelatory collection of songs exploring several overlooked worlds of women composers, from the height of the Romantic Era to the present day. The program has been called “a love-letter to women in music” exploring themes of love, nature, folklore and belief – all from a distinctly female perspective – in songs by Nadia Boulanger, Emilie Mayer, Rebecca Clarke and Clara Schumann, and a new three-song cycle called “This Be Her Verse” by Kathleen Tagg and Lila Palmer.

FamilyJam builds on the success of KidsJam Workshops for Homeschool Families – interactive programs that connect kids and families with community teaching artists to learn about the people, cultures, and musical traditions from around the world as they make music, move, and enjoy other creative activities. FamilyJam will take KidsJam programs into the weekend, where kids and families will experience a short 25-30 minute concert in one of Landmark Center’s historic spaces, followed by instrument demos and other hands-on experiences with the musicians in the  Schubert Club Music Museum. In keeping with Schubert Club’s goal of offering free tickets to children and students, FamilyJam will be FREE for all participants, however advance registration will be required through Schubert Club’s website.

Le Consort is a new and distinctive ensemble made up of four young musicians who share a passion for exploring the riches of the Baroque repertoire. Their performances, on period instruments of the day, are known for their originality, vitality, and enthusiasm in illuminating works for two violins and basso continuo –  the quintessential baroque ensemble.

 Three classical superstars join forces in this piano trio, born out of friendship, that creates a remarkable chemistry onstage. Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet has performed worldwide for more than three decades and built a reputation as one of the greatest pianists of our age playing the great standard piano repertoire and non-classical transciptions alike.  His list of professional friendships spans the globe, and has led to innovative collaborations in visual art, fashion, and film. He appears as a soloist on the soundtrack of Wes Anderson’s 2021 film The French Dispatch, and can also be heard in the films Pride and Prejudice, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Wakefield, and Atonement. Thibaudet is a committed educator, and the first-ever Artist-in-Residence at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he makes his home. Thibaudet performed on Schubert Club’s International Artist Series previously with soprano Renée Fleming.

The 2023-2024 season of Schubert Club Mix opens at the Landmark Center on October 10, 2023 with a performance by close-knit British vocal ensemble Stile Antico, One of the world’s leading a capella ensembles. Stile Antico’s program England’s Nightingale: the remarkable music of William Byrd marks 400 years since Byrd’s death, and will take full advantage of Landmark Center’s cathedral-like acoustic.

The Academy Chamber Ensemble was formed in 1967, drawing its membership from the world-renowned chamber orchestra the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which was itself founded by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 and is currently led by Music Director Joshua Bell. The ensemble was created in order to perform the larger scale chamber music repertoire with players who customarily worked together, instead of the usual string quartet with additional guests. Drawn from the principal players of the orchestra and led by violinist Tomo Keller,the Chamber Ensemble now performs in multiple configurations from wind trios to string octets. Its touring commitments are extensive and include regular tours of Europe and North America, whilst recording contracts with Philips Classics, Hyperion, and Chandos have led to the release of over thirty CDs.

Formed in Israel as teenagers at their Jerusalem middle school, the Ariel Quartet is now renowned worldwide for their fiery, dynamic performing style and soulful interpretations. In celebration of their 20th anniversary in 2020, the Ariel Quartet was the recipient of the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, granted by Chamber Music America in recognition of their artistic achievements. Based in Cincinnati, the Ariel Quartet is the Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where they present a concert series in addition to maintaining a busy touring schedule in the United States and abroad.

With superb musicianship and an infectious camaraderie, Speaking in Tongues creates an environment that is engaging and exhilarating. The collective sound of the group draws on so many sources that listeners from all walks of life can connect easily. Four outstanding musicians blend music from four different cultures on a stage full of instruments from all over the world. The result – a concert experience that is spellbinding, entertaining, and unprecedented. Speaking in Tongues is master drummer, multi-instrumentalist and composer Sowah Mensah from Ghana, Enrique Toussaint, the virtuoso bassist from Mexico City, Twin Cities master percussionist Marc Anderson, and Gao Hong, one of the world’s foremost performers on the Chinese four-stringed lute, the pipa. When considering the individual voices, one is struck by the truly distinctive quality of this music and the level of skill and musical maturity required to shape it into the spirited and the coherent musical expression that it is. Their music has been described as a West African drum ensemble driving along under the butterfly wings of an Asian melody, the romance of Brazilian jazz orchestrated with Middle Eastern drums, and folk music from a new world. Rich compositions set up by free roaming improvisations lead the listener through open landscapes of gentle rustlings and sparse instrumentation and then, with a subtle turn, plunge them into thick forests populated by percussion and bass.

In March 2023, International Artist Series audiences will be treated to his artistry in a program featuring works by Rameau, Szymanowski, Messiaen, Reena Esmail, Gabriella Smith, and Schumann.

From behind the harp, and behind the microphone, Kibbey will cast a light on how Debussy changed the way we hear harmony, how Fauré and Caplet were watching and responding, and how the harp turns itself from the most sacred of personas…to the of harbinger of death, via Edgar Allen Poe’s infamous short story “The Mask of the Red Death.”
