Schmaltz & Pepper is a spellbinding Yiddish music ensemble playing klezmer inspired by jazz, Roma, classical, and European folk music. This powerhouse group's members include acclaimed Toronto Symphony principal clarinetist Eric Abramovitz, a passionate and gifted klezmer musician, and Grammy-nominated Drew Jurecka on violin/accordion/mandolin. Joined by Juno-winning pianist Jeremy Ledbetter, award-winning bassist Michael Herring and renowned Payadora violinist/vocalist Rebekah Wolkstein, they produce and perform original arrangements of klezmer and Yiddish music, displaying their joyous and virtuosic genre-bending fusion of many musical styles.

Described by World Music Central as "one of the great new voices in Spanish language Latin music, " Amanda Martinez has been embraced by the masses all over the world with four previously released, highly acclaimed albums to her credit. 

 

Her highly anticipated new album Recuerdo is a daring departure that incorporates elements of world fusion, Cuban rhythms, and an injection of English pop and is her most adventurous album to date.  It is dedicated to the memory of her father Gustavo who bicycled to Toronto from Mexico in 1956 and from whom she says “I got my love of music.”

His ongoing fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony has been at the heart of his music throughout a celebrated career that has spanned four decades and earned him critical accolades, four gold albums, two platinum albums, more than six million in record sales worldwide, five German gold albums, and various awards including an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Berklee College of Music, the Honorary Miles Davis Award presented by the Montreal Jazz Festival, a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Sir George Martin in 2008, Hungarian Foundation for Performing Arts Lyra Award, and numerous Grammy nominations and awards. Al has won a total of 12 awards from Guitar Player Magazine polls and, as a result, was inducted into their Gallery of Greats.

The phenomenal Dover Quartet is joined by Norway’s foremost pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, who gave a masterful recital in Koerner Hall in January 2023.

Named one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years by BBC Music Magazine, the Grammy Award nominated Dover Quartet’s rise from up-and-coming young ensemble who swept all the prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition to occupying a spot at the top of their field has been “practically meteoric” (Strings). With its burnished warmth, incisive rhythms, and natural phrasing, the Quartet’s distinctive sound has helped confirm its status as “the young American string quartet of the moment” (The New Yorker). As Strad observes, “With their exceptional interpretative maturity, tonal refinement, and taut ensemble,” the Dover Quartet is “pulling away from their peers.”

Acclaimed vocalist Lizz Wright is a steward of American music, bringing brilliant colour and vibrancy to singular original works and compositions by some of the greatest songwriters of our time. Through an inimitable voice that The New York Times touts as “a smooth, dark alto possessed of qualities you might associate with barrel-aged bourbon or butter-soft leather,” Wright sings with a soaring reflection of the cultural fabric of America.

The students of The Ihnatowycz Piano Program at The Glenn Gould School are featured in an evening of dazzling works for two pianos and piano four hands.

Two master composers provide inspiration for this concert. Schafer’s work is concerned with the last days of Robert Schumann, from the time of his first hallucinations until his death in the Endenich asylum in 1856. Adapted selections from Clara Schumann’s diaries form the monodrama in Schafer’s work. The piece incorporates fragments of Schumann’s own vocal and piano compositions including the melody he wrote down the night of his first hallucination which he claimed was dictated to him by the angels. Harmonielehre is a musical tour-de-force. In Adams’ words, his piece, “postmodern in spirit”, is “a large, three-movement work for orchestra that marries the developmental techniques of Minimalism with the harmonic and expressive world of fin de siècle late Romanticism”.

“The most exciting British string player since Jacqueline du Pré” (The Observer), Koerner Hall favourite Hope returns with his ensemble to explore the rich world of Irish music.

Hope has toured the world as a virtuoso soloist for 25 years and is celebrated for his musical versatility as well as his dedication to humanitarian causes. Winner of the 2015 European Cultural Prize for Music, he appears as soloist with the world’s major orchestras and conductors. In addition, he gives a dizzying array of solo recitals, chamber concerts, and directs many ensembles from the violin. He succeeded Roger Norrington as Music Director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra in 2016 and is also Music Director of San Francisco’s New Century Chamber Orchestra since 2018.

Hailed as “one of the great queens of Malian music” (Rolling Stone), charismatic Grammy and UNESCO Award-winning vocalist Oumou Sangaré’s music is defiantly uplifting, full of buoyant West African grooves, hypnotic melodicism, and her joyful, soulful voice. Over her acclaimed career, "The Songbird of Wassoulou" has worked with pioneering Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, sung on Herbie Hancock’s Imagine project, released 11 solo albums, and been cited as an inspiration by the likes of Alicia Keys, Aya Nakamura, and Beyoncé.

Founded in 1900, The Philadelphia Orchestra has distinguished itself as one of the leading orchestras in the world through a century of acclaimed performances, historic international tours, and best-selling recordings. Renowned for its luscious string tone, the ensemble is on a path to create an expansive future for classical music. The Orchestra boasts an extraordinary record of media firsts, including being the first symphonic orchestra to make electrical recordings (in 1925), the first to perform its own commercially sponsored radio broadcast (in 1929, on NBC), the first to perform on the soundtrack of a feature film (Paramount’s The Big Broadcast of 1937), the first to appear on a national television broadcast (in 1948, on CBS), and the first major orchestra to give a live cybercast of a concert on the internet (in 1997)

The ARC Ensemble performs Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s extravagantly lush Piano Quintet, and works for string quartet and clarinet by his Viennese contemporary Ernest Kanitz. Both settled in Los Angeles during the 1930s, where Korngold became the most celebrated film composer of the day and Kanitz became a legendary teacher at the University of Southern California.

Aaron Schwebel returns to our stage to perform the entire The Four Seasons Recomposed by Richter whose re-writing of Vivaldi’s work moves it away from being the omnipresent piece of muzak that it has become. In contrast, Ligeti’s violin concerto, creating unexpected new sounds combined in novel ways, even uses mistuned string instruments, ocarinas and slide whistles to suggest Hungarian folksong. Shimmering harmonies, slow-moving, soaring melodies and rhythmic complexities and the “mad virtuosity” of the soloist’s role all contribute to the high level of excitement in this piece. Forming a bridge between the “baroque” harpsichord material in the Richter and the modern nature of Ligeti’s work, a solo harpsichord piece by Ligeti appears as a musical amuse-bouche.

An alumna of The Glenn Gould School, Macedonian-Canadian mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska has performed with acclaimed international orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Berlin, Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur conducted by Barbara Hannigan. She is a current BBC New Generation Artist who won first prize at the International Vocal Competition in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Ferrier Loveday Song Prize (Kathleen Ferrier Awards), and was a prize winner at the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) International Auditions. In 2022, she became a recipient of the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award.

Delve into the beauty and emotion of Franz Schubert's Winterreise, performed by the Toronto Mendelssohn Singers, renowned Canadian baritone Brett Polegato, and Juno Award-winning pianist Philip Chiu. Presented in a new adaptation for choir, baritone, and piano, this stunning vocal masterpiece recounts the story of a wanderer's heartbreak and despair as they travel through a frozen world. The concert also features works by Fanny Hensel, one of the first published female composers, and Clara Schumann, widely regarded as one of the most significant composers and pianists of the Romantic era. Under the direction of Jean-Sébastien Vallée, the TMSingers bring their signature artistry to some of the most beautiful pages of vocal repertoire.

Charles Perrault’s classic story of a lonely “cinder” girl, an unhappy household, and a searching prince is given human dimension in this 19th century masterpiece. Massenet’s sweeping, lyric score elevates this simple folktale to a compelling narrative of self-discovery, a quest for enduring love, and the power of goodness.

“One of the best jazz bands in New York” (Forbes), The Hot Sardines is a group of irreverent, effortlessly swinging, early-jazz specialists, including a tap dancing soloist. Their unique repertoire features sultry standards from the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s, rich New Orleans sounds, a dash of ’40s Paris flavour, and vibrant musical surprises. With their contagious brand of joy, grit, glamour, and passion, they invoke the sounds of nearly a century ago, yet stay right in step with the current age.

One of Koerner Hall’s most in demand recitalists, pianist Hélène Grimaud is a singular artist, an interpreter known for her fierce intelligence and sincere freedom of expression. A multi-faceted artist, her deep dedication to her musical career, both in performances and recordings, is reflected and reciprocally amplified by the scope and depth of her environmental, literary, and artistic interests. Her prodigious contribution to and impact on the world of classical music were recognised by the French government when she was admitted into the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur (France’s highest decoration) at the rank of Chevalier (Knight).

Violinist Isabelle Faust, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, and pianist Alexander Melnikov take us on a fascinating journey through a thrilling repertory of piano trio ‘hits,’- including the “Ghost” and “Dumky” ‘hits’ by Beethoven, Brahms, and Elliott Carter.

“A Born Communicator” (Le Temps), Joshua Weilerstein is the Artistic Director of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne who enjoys a flourishing guest conducting career. He has been praised for “intense, eloquently moving and spectacularly knife-edge” performances (Classical Source).

Following their widely acclaimed collaboration on Lagrime di San Pietro (which was performed at Koerner Hall in 2020), Peter Sellars, Grant Gershon, and singers of the Los Angeles Master Chorale reunite with a deeply personal yet uplifting meditation on what it means to say goodbye to those we love. 24 singers will be accompanied by Baroque organ and viol da gamba to create an intimate ceremony of connection across time and space.

U of T presents University of Toronto New Music Festival: “Anniversaries”

The Orchestra brings together the cream of Cape-Verdean musicianship and vocalists to honour the late and legendary Cesária Évora. This tribute to the “Barefoot Diva” features some of today’s greatest voices, including Elida Almeida, Teófilo Chantre, Lucibela, Lura, and Nancy Vieira.

The world-renowned chamber choir returns to Toronto with music by legendary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, Palestrina, and a world premiere by Estonian/Canadian composer Omar Daniel.

Led by its founder Tõnu Kaljuste, The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (EPCC) is one of the world’s foremost vocal ensembles, famous for their interpretations of music by their beloved countryman Arvo Pärt. Their program includes Pärt favourites like Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis, Dopo la Vittoria and Kanon Pokajanen, as well as works by another great spiritualist of centuries past, Palestrina, including three selections of his Offertorium.

Widely revered as the greatest jazz saxophonist of his generation, Joshua Redman returns following his sold-out Koerner Hall concert last season with a brand new project.

Redman’s new album where are we marks his first-ever with a vocalist – the mesmerizing Gabrielle Cavassa. Co-winner of the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, Cavassa is an enthralling emerging musician whose artistry is as influenced by Amy Winehouse as by Billie Holiday.

Known for “an exceptional blend of precision with tonal generosity” (BBC Music Magazine), violinist Mayumi Seiler performs with esteemed pianist Jeanie Chung in a program featuring two monumental sonatas, Schubert’s “Grand Duo” and Schumann’s No. 2 in D Minor, op. 121. She will also be joined by special guest, violinist Min Jeong Koh, for the Prokofiev Duo for Two Violins, op. 56.

Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has been called “a renaissance artist at the height of his powers” (BBC) and “the greatest working jazz pianist” (The New Yorker). He is first and foremost an improviser but also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, with the structure of his musical thought serving as an expressive device.

Collaborating with some of the world’s great orchestras, Esprit has co-commissioned Operascope for orchestra by Unsuk Chin and will give the work’s North American Premiere on this program. Operascope traces the history of operatic music – with references to Verdi, Puccini, Messiaen, Berg and Shostakovich. Azrieli Music Prize-winner Rita Ueda’s double concerto, with musicians positioned throughout Koerner Hall, blends Japanese, Chinese and Western influences with the Canadian landscape (especially bird calls) and pursues a new transcultural musical identity by asking what it means to migrate and settle on land already rich in history. Mochizuki’s musical collage intimates deep psychological transformations as described by Carl G. Jung and almost subliminally incorporates an homage to Robert Schumann.

Canadian-born violinist Lara St. John has been described as "something of a phenomenon" by The Strad and a “high-powered soloist” by The New York Times.

She performs solo violin pieces composed by 12 leading composers, including Laurie Anderson, Valerie Coleman, Gabriela Lena Frank, and more.

Indígena is an exciting and engaging showcase of outstanding adventurous music, with a particular focus on Tania León's powerful and evocative composition, Indigena. This work for large ensemble is a highlight of the evening, immersing the audience in a lush and vibrant sound world that is both uplifting and thought-provoking.

Turkish pianist Fazıl Say has been touching audiences and critics alike with his extraordinary talents for more than 25 years. He is not simply a pianist of genius, but also a master composer and improviser. He will perform his own works for solo piano, voice, and chamber ensemble with Turkish-Canadian mezzo-soprano Beste Kalender, Lara and Scott St. John (violins), Barry Shiffman (viola), and Winona Zelenka (cello).

Angela Hewitt’s interpretations of the music of J.S. Bach have established her as one of the composer’s foremost interpreters of our time. One of the world’s leading concert pianists, she has been awarded an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II and was promoted to a Companion of the Order of Canada. She was Artist of the Year at the 2006 Gramophone Awards, Instrumentalist of the Year at the 2010 MIDEM Classical Awards in Cannes, and, in 2018, received the Governor General’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Ottawa. She is a member of the Royal Society of Canada, has seven honorary doctorates, and is an alumna of The Royal Conservatory of Music.

Performed in the style and spirit of the composer’s own productions, Tafelmusik’s Messiah “radiates brilliance and energy, along with an emotional depth that fully enhances the work’s expression” (AllMusic). Messiah’s core message of good will, hope, and humanity resounds as eloquently today as it did in 1742.

“It’s such a cliché to describe a person as a ray of sunshine… violinist Rachel Podger is living proof that clichés are based in reality. Known for her “serene virtuoso fluency” (Gramophone), Rachel Podger launches Tafelmusik’s season with a piece of buried treasure—the incidental music for Thamos, King of Egypt. Mozart’s love for the theatre shines throughout the work, which mirrors the play’s dramatic arc while foreshadowing the lyricism of his final opera, The Magic Flute.
