He was not yet 15 years old when Mendelssohn Bartholdy was already able to present twelve short so-called string symphonies. They were already far more than compositional finger exercises and caused open-mouthed performances at the distinguished concerts in his parents' garden hall (with professional musicians from the royal court orchestra!).
