A Harmonious March: Celebrating Musical Masterpieces at Konzerthaus Blaibach

The quartet led by world-renowned violinist Christian Tetzlaff has been setting standards for over 30 years. The long-standing friendship and close bond between its members has given rise to a special musical sensitivity and a sophisticated sound culture, which the quartet will put to use in two masterpieces of the genre.

The Sestetto Stradivari, composed of members of the Orchestra dell' Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, has earned an excellent reputation since its founding in 2001. As one of the few string sextets with a permanent ensemble, it devotes itself with skill and passion to the masterpieces composed for this magnificent ensemble.

The Blaibach Concert Hall concludes its annual program with a festive Christmas event. Star trumpeter Gábor Boldoczki and the Gabetta Consort will present sparkling Italian baroque pearls.

Since its founding in 2010, Trio Gaspard has established itself as one of the finest and most sought-after piano trios of its generation. The ensemble, led by the wonderful pianist and chamber musician Nicholas Rimmer, is dedicated to the classical trio repertoire, but also explores more obscure works and contemporary works. The first installments of its complete recording of the Haydn Trios have been critically acclaimed and, according to "Strad" magazine, "have left us wanting more." Following performances at London's Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Shanghai Symphony Hall, among others, Trio Gaspard now makes its Blaibach debut.

The British press once described him as an "incomparable keyboard poet": Arcadi Volodos has been considered one of the world's finest pianists since his sensational New York debut in 1996. His repertoire encompasses the most important works of piano literature, from Beethoven to Prokofiev, but he also devotes himself to less frequently performed pieces by Mompou, Lecuona, and de Falla. Recitals by this piano giant are events that audiences eagerly anticipate.

The Barenboim-Said Academy opened in 2015 as a tangible extension of the spirit and mission of the WestEastern Divan Orchestra. Named after the orchestra's founders and leading figures, the Barenboim-Said Academy is dedicated to training a new generation of musicians.

Originally intended for a single performance, Mozart's arrangement of Handel's "Messiah" has earned a special place in the concert repertoire. The German texts and Mozart's subtle adaptations to the instrumental customs of his time cast the most famous of all oratorios in an unusual light.

The Federal Police Orchestra Munich was founded in 1952 as the "BGS Music Corps," making it almost as old as the Federal Police itself. The chamber orchestra, in the style of classical harmony, plays in a variety of ensembles—flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, double bass, and percussion—in styles ranging from Viennese classical to jazz. Proceeds from this benefit concert will benefit the Cham Children's Cancer Support Group.

A new take on Bach's Goldberg Variations: The Jewish Chamber Orchestra Munich performs them in the sensitive arrangement for chamber orchestra by Józef Koffler, a Polish-Jewish composer whose career began very successfully. In the late 1920s, however, under the pressure of political developments, he stopped composing himself and orchestrated the works of others. He was assassinated in 1944, and to this day, his work remains little known. In the interplay of strings and woodwind, his orchestration explores new aspects of Bach's "Clavier Uebung": Baroque variation art meets the richness of sound of a small orchestra.

Since its inception, Musica Juventutis has been a cornerstone of Austrian concert culture and a fixture in the Vienna Konzerthaus's music program. Many internationally acclaimed artists, such as Angelika Kirchschlager, Till Fellner, and Patricia Kopatchinskaja, made their debuts as part of Musica Juventutis. This year, we present Leonhard Baumgartner, an up-and-coming violinist who made his debut with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15. With this series, the Vienna and Blaibach concert halls are continuing a collaboration made possible through the generous support of Dr. Burkhard and Gabriele Gantenbein.

László Fenyö has been among the world's elite cellists since winning the 2004 International Pablo Casals Competition in Kronberg. Together with one of Poland's most renowned ensembles, he brings a program full of surprises to the Konzerthaus, culminating in one of the most popular cello concertos in music history.

The Chicago Tribune praised the playing of Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma as "absolutely stunning." With her, we are privileged to experience one of classical music's most distinctive and captivating figures in Beethoven's Violin Concerto. Since winning First Prize at the 2010 Warsaw Chopin Competition, pianist Yulianna Avdeeva has captivated audiences worldwide with the sensitivity and conviction of her interpretations. Her spectacular concert hall program culminates in Frédéric Chopin's iconic cycle of 24 Preludes—a piano feast!

Philippe Herreweghe and his ensemble Collegium Vocale Gent have significantly shaped the history of historical performance practice. With select sacred madrigals and instrumental gems, their "Ladder of Paradise" program takes us on a spiritual journey to courtly Italy in the late 16th century. Early music at a world-class level.

Awarded the Polar Music Prize in 2025, soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan is one of the most charismatic and versatile artists of our time. In Blaibach, she will sing two magnificent song cycles with Bertrand Chamayou, who will also be heard as the eminent Scriabin soloist: Olivier Messiaen's "Chants de terre et de ciel" and John Zorn's "Jumalattaret." Sensual vocal pearls oscillate between lyrical simplicity and fascinating complexity—a major vocal event.

Pianist Mari Kodama is internationally acclaimed for her virtuosity across a wide range of repertoire. With her natural musicality and unerring sense of form, sound, and expression, she has become one of the most important Beethoven interpreters of our time. Following her wonderful Konzerthaus performances in 2024 and 2025, she now continues her spectacular sonata cycle, bringing Beethoven into dialogue with piano music by the renowned contemporary composer Rodolphe Bruneau-Boulmier.

As one of the most versatile musicians of the younger generation, Franziska Hölscher sets special concert accents with her virtuoso violin playing and her thoughtful programs – in Blaibach with Karl Amadeus Hartmann's moving "Concerto funebre." Her partners from the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra let Mozart's magnificent C major Quintet shine in full string splendor.

We're having a celebrity guest at the start of our weekend with the Bavarian State Opera: Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, a member of the ensemble from 2012 to 2016, is a sought-after singer who performs on the world's most important opera and concert stages. She sings Alexander Zemlinsky's extended setting of a poem by Richard Dehmel, whose poetry also inspired Arnold Schoenberg to create his most famous piece, the sextet "Transfigured Night." Interspersed with Richard Wagner's Tristan-like Wesendonck Lieder: unimagined bliss...

Among the great pianists of our time, Christian Zacharias is considered the one who most naturally combines intellectual insight with an unpretentious narrative tone. His sophisticated Blaibach program—following masterpieces by Joseph Haydn and Franz Schubert—builds a bridge from the Baroque to the compelling originality of the French master composer Francis Poulenc.

Robert Wiene's film based on Richard Strauss's successful opera "Der Rosenkavalier" thrives on a harmonious balance of moods: Alfred Roller's magnificent scenery and costumes combine with the silent, yet eloquent acting of the actors and the virtually endless symphonic breath of the score, composed especially for the film. The music, which freely oscillates between waltz and march idioms, as well as character and scene motifs, is heard here in a version for a 14-piece salon orchestra. Great cinema!

For many, it is the ultimate opera: With their "Don Giovanni," Lorenzo da Ponte and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart created the prototype of the male seducer—a dazzling figure surrounded by complex, sensitively drawn characters, each connected to him in their own way. A festive gala concert with arias, duets, and ensembles brings this masterpiece of musical theater to life.

Led by Hans-Christoph Rademann, the Gaechinger Cantorey embodies the highest level of Bach expertise. We are fortunate that the ensemble is stopping in Blaibach to perform four impressive examples from Bach's epochal cantata oeuvre. "Give us wings of faith!"

An impressive title role and magnificent choirs – from the mighty “Help, Lord!” to the famous double quartet “For he has commanded his angels” to the final chorus “Then your light will shine”: With his “Elijah,” Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed what is arguably the most important Romantic oratorio, one that still casts its timeless spell over us today.

"Richard Galliano changed the history of the accordion. We can speak of a time before and after Galliano." (Yasuhiro Kobayashi) The esteem in which Richard Galliano is held across all genres speaks for itself. Above all, however, his warm, poetic accordion sound appeals to us. Between tango, musette, and jazz, a new musical world opens up in which one can always feel at home.

A 'human' requiem, not for liturgy, but as a concert oratorio: this is what Johannes Brahms had in mind with his "German Requiem," a work with which he intended to offer comfort to those left behind. The more intimate, almost chamber music-like moments of the work exude something timelessly touching. This is especially evident in Brahms's own arrangement for piano duet.

A spontaneous concert has given rise to a unique artistic partnership: In this top-class duo, Francesco Tristano's classical roots and his openness to influences from neo-classical, minimal music, and techno combine with Marialy Pacheco's jazzy Latino vibes. The trio, part of the renowned Well family of musicians, performs classical works in a special ensemble, combining them with elements from tango, czardas, and jazz, among others. In Blaibach, the trio presents a musical journey from Paris to Istanbul under the motto "Orient Express." Diverse approaches – fresh perspectives – unique sound experiences!

The vocal expressiveness and subtle brilliance of color with which Béla Bartók depicts the symbolically charged plot of the sinister Duke and Judith, who fearlessly uncovers his secrets, is unparalleled. The Konzerthaus will perform the brilliant score in a concentrated version for 15 instrumentalists, brilliantly arranged by the young Belgian composer Siebe Thijs. Open the doors for what is arguably the most gripping one-act opera in music history!

We are delighted to welcome Christoph Prégardien, one of the most important lieder interpreters of our time, back to the Konzerthaus. In his program, he interweaves Franz Schubert's famous last cycle with songs by the great composer Wolfgang Rihm, who died in 2024.
