The JACK Quartet—hailed by The New York Times as “fearless” and “one of contemporary music’s indispensable ensembles”—returns (after making their Festival debut in 2025) to premiere commissioned works by the two participants in the Festival’s 13th annual Young Composers String Quartet Project and to play two exciting works they commissioned for their Modern Medieval program, which explores “the connections of musicality and thought between European composers of the past and the voices of American music today.”

JACK Quartet performs George Friedrich Haas’ visionary Third String Quartet—designed to be experienced in total darkness. As Haas wrote about this work, “The outline of one’s hand will ideally not be visible even when directly in front of their face. The darkness is absolute, and the effect is disorienting: an audience member feels they have become absorbed in a level of blackness with no visual cues to demarcate the size and shape of the space or their relation to it.” JACK Quartet, the foremost interpreters of Haas’ work, surround the audience in this unique performance of his String Quartet No. 3,  “in iij Noct.” Part of the Body and Sound festival organized by LA Phil Insight and Liquid Music, this performance uniquely considers how senses shape perception of music in an unconventional concert experience in total darkness.

Following a highly successful performance at the Birch Aquarium in May 2024, co-presented by Art of Elan and ArtPower, the internationally renowned JACK Quartet returns to San Diego with an exciting program that features the world premiere of a new work by UC San Diego (UCSD) faculty member and composer, Rand Steiger, as well as “Three Imaginary Chansons” by Juri Seo. This one-night-only special event will take place in the acoustically superb Conrad Prebys Concert Hall on campus at UCSD and will offer a chance to meet the composer and musicians immediately following the performance.
