At the time this concert was being planned, the deranged American president was turning the USA upside down. As an observer, one is torn, since he was given this opportunity through a democratic process. On the other hand, one feels great empathy for all those who now have to worry about their livelihoods.

The Good Ones

The pianist Beatrice Berrut, together with her collaborators Benjamin Herzl, Benedict Mitterbauer, and Matthias Bartolomey, traces the footsteps of Johannes Brahms and his lifelong friend Clara Schumann. "This is yet another who seems to have been sent by God himself!" she noted in her diary when she and her husband Robert first met the young Brahms. The following year, he wrote his first piano trio, which he significantly revised in 1889. His Piano Quartet in G minor, premiered in 1861 with Clara Schumann at the piano, was an immediate success.

Music from the 60s by Elvis, the Beatles, Louis Prima, Dean Martin, and Paul Anka – reimagined! Their own translations, faithful to the originals, bring the songs to life and make their meanings relatable. "It's Now or Never" becomes "Jetzt oder nie" (Now or Never), Louis Prima's "Gigolo" transforms into "A wüda Bua" (A Wild Boy), instead of "Jackson," we travel to "Sankt Pölten" (St. Pölten) with Johnny Cash, and "La vie en rose" celebrates the good life. These eccentric characters from the Oktoberfest also bring Viennese music: from Bronner's "Gschupftem Ferdl" (Snappy Ferdl) and Hodina's "Kirschen" (Cherries) to Danzer and Heller's "Zigeina" (Gypsy) – charming, quirky, and with a twinkle in their eyes.

Together with the Viennese drummer and composer Fritz Rainer, the actor Philipp Hochmair presents an evening of Friedrich Schiller's ballads and poems imbued with the spirit of revolution. These works reflect Schiller's enthusiastic confidence in the individual's capacity to shape the course of history. In an experimental setting, the ballads encounter Fritz Rainer's soundscape, confronting Schiller's breathless Sturm und Drang with contemporary acoustic experiences.

Soul, pop, classical – pianist Maria Radutu loves pushing boundaries. The song "Noches de insomnio" by singer and violinist Phoebe Violet sparked this collaborative program. Joining her is LYLIT, the singer and composer with the powerful soul voice, who engages in a dialogue on two pianos with Maria Radutu, while also singing herself. This creates an intense interplay of emotions, profound, through light and shadow, which they share with the audience. The songs of LYLIT and Phoebe Violet merge seamlessly with the classical pieces selected by Maria Radutu to form a captivating overall experience.

For her portrayal of the life-loving wife in the Oscar-nominated film "Revanche," she received the Diagonale Special Prize; her chaotic, intuitive detective Angelika Schnell won a Romy Award; and for her portrayal of the courageous farmer in "Maybe in Another Life," she received the Austrian Film Award.

This evening, the Jewish Chamber Orchestra Munich, under the direction of Daniel Grossmann, blends Klezmer, Wagner, and contemporary sounds. Joining them are the charismatic actor Stefan Merki and the captivating singer Ethel Merhaut. 
A poor Jewish musician, barely scraping by with wedding performances, fulfills a dream: with his hard-earned savings, he treats himself to a visit to the Imperial Court Theatre in Vienna. By chance, he hears – without any prior knowledge – Wagner's Lohengrin. The opera transforms his life: back in his shtetl, he insists on playing only Wagner's melodies at Jewish celebrations, no longer the traditional tunes – which naturally leads to conflict.

TheNew Vienna Court ChapelIt was founded by Reinmar Wolf to present the music of the Strauss dynasty as it was customary in the 19th century – in varying ensembles: sometimes for dancing, sometimes as stylish background music for social gatherings. The program is a "Best of New Year's Concert" – not in elaborate arrangements, but faithfully reproduced in small chamber music ensembles, with and without vocals. It feels like stepping back into imperial times – it was wonderful, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Everyday gestures, everyday sounds – condensed into a composition! Six hands make music, the instrument is a table: this is how Terry de Wey's "Musique du Table" comes to be. On the table, a bottle and a glass now play: with these props, the vocally and theatrically experienced harpist Veronica Klavzar and the percussionist Hannes Schöggl perform "Retrouvailles" by George Aperghis. "Intersections," by Hannes Schöggl and Veronica Klavzar, combines contemporary music and movement in an interdisciplinary concert performance with three performers. Not only the instrument, but also the body now participates – resonating. An experimental music and movement composition that not only shatters traditional notions of harp playing, but also opens up new perspectives on the question of what dance and what music are, what separates the two, and how much they have in common. Everyday human emotions such as tenderness, loneliness, dependence, fascination, enthusiasm, jealousy, envy, community, unity, and equality emerge in the individual scenes of the work. Hannes Schöggl has composed Christian Morgenstern's "Fish's Night Song" for three mouths: exquisite mouth percussion as an interactive animation – the audience is encouraged to click, smack, make lip and kissing sounds, and perform tongue gymnastics!

The Concert In The New Year

“Here is magic. Into the realm of enchantment / the common word seems elevated… / and yet is truly like the call of the deaf, / calling for the invisible dove.” Thus ends Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem “Magic.” Rilke, a poet still deeply revered today, understood like few others how to capture feelings in words. The twin brothers Alexander and Konstantin Wladigeroff delve into his poetic universe and dedicate a musical homage to him with piano, clarinet, trumpet, flugelhorn, and vocals, in their own compositions and arrangements. Gerti Drassl, known from film and television, enchants the audience with a reading of selected poems.

Bach's works are of such grandeur and fascination that the choice of instruments on which they are played quickly becomes irrelevant. This is especially true given that Bach himself wrote many pieces for a variety of instruments. The Finnish accordion virtuoso Janne Rättyä was therefore inspired to create unusual Bach arrangements. He also tackled the wonderful piano Petitesses of Henri Dutilleux, as well as Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances, which perfectly complement the Hungarian-inspired finale in Brahms's masterful String Quintet.

That's what the audience thought, applauding loudly, and that's what the gray eminences of Viennese music, seated in the front row, thought: above all, Roland J. Neuwirth and Ernst Weber. The shepherds represent us all; everyone can and should identify with them. The Good Shepherd concerts are a tradition at the MuTh: In the Vienna Boys' Choir's Christmas concert, the various campus choirs present themselves with evocative motets and songs, both a cappella and with orchestra.

To mark the 125th anniversary of Ernst Krenek's birth, the MUK Symphony Orchestra presents his concert aria "Monologue of Stella" (1928) – this time in its rarely heard orchestral version. The impressive fusion of lyrical expression and modern sound creates a subtle bridge to Viennese Classicism. The latter takes center stage with Mozart's elegiac Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, K. 364, and Beethoven's witty and pointed Symphony No. 8, Op. 93.

The International Competition for Young Composers (ICYC) is initiated and organized jointly by the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing (CCOM), Universal Edition Vienna (UE), and the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. The competition takes place every two years, alternating between chamber music and orchestral composition. With the aim of providing a platform for young composers from around the world to showcase their talent, the competition seeks to strengthen academic and cultural exchange and foster community building.

With Cobra, John Zorn, arguably the most famous representative of the revolutionary American downtown scene of the 80s and 90s, created a true classic of the late 20th century. This "game piece" for improvising musicians and a prompter doesn't use traditional notation, but rather a system of cards and rules. The title is inspired by a strategy game. Groups around the world continue to gather to explore new interpretations of the composition.

The Jewish Community of Vienna invites you to one of the musical highlights of the year at the MuTh in Vienna on November 27: the traditional Cantors' Concert. “Music may not change the world, but it can inspire people to change it,” said the legendary Austrian jazz musician Joe Zawinul. Flip Philipp, a master of the vibraphone, was fortunate enough to meet him in early 2004 and collaborate with him for three days on a joint project at Vienna City Hall. This experience left a lasting impression on Flip Philipp. It also provided the inspiration for a new approach to the musical creation process and its interpretation. In his tribute, Flip Philipp and his quintet recall this time and draw inspiration from the early Joe Zawinul.

Ode to Nature(Concept: Timotej Kosovinc) is more than a concert – it's a sensory journey and a deeply moving experience. At its heart is nature, our greatest source of inspiration. Yet modern life increasingly alienates us from it, especially in cities where genuine contact has become rare. But when nature becomes tangible again, we realize: it is our origin, full of beauty, power, and diversity. This concert celebrates nature with music and visuals – impressive, moving, and unforgettable.

“I am a Frenchman from the East, a humanist, a rationalist with religion, a Catholic with a Jewish brain, a true revolutionary.” This is how Joseph Roth, the celebrated writer born in 1894 in Eastern Galicia, now Ukraine, characterized himself. Erwin Steinhauer and the Ukrainian accordionist Andrej Serkov conjure up Roth’s literary worlds together. First, with “The Model Pupil,” about an ambitious man who seems to succeed at everything, while laughter and love remain out of his reach. Then with the novella “The Emperor’s Bust,” in which Roth sends Count Morstin into exile through the crumbling monarchy, a situation into which he himself was forced in 1933.

Only the original instrumentation – and not one of many arrangements. That was the strict requirement of the three musical adventurers, Daniel Ottensamer, Stephan Koncz, and Christoph Traxler. The result is a complete anthology for clarinet trio, from which three pieces were chosen for an exciting journey. It begins with the healing power of bel canto sounds. For after a breakdown in Italy, Vincenzo Bellini enthusiast Mikhail Glinka essentially healed himself with the composition of his Trio pathétique. John Ireland then takes us to Britain's coast, complete with a sea shanty, before we reach the summit with the trio titan Beethoven.

Her captivating travelogues form the starting point for a musical exploration brimming with curiosity and a thirst for adventure. The music blends narrative jazz with influences from classical and pop. In sensitive, powerful, and sometimes even tongue-in-cheek compositions, Listabarth tells of early dreams, forbidden love, caravans through the desert, encounters with foreign cultures, and an unquenchable inner drive to discover the world. It's about more than just historical anecdotes: Ida Pfeiffer's life touches on universal themes such as departure, curiosity, disappointment, courage, and overcoming boundaries. Martin Listabarth transforms Ida Pfeiffer's life into a soundtrack for the here and now.

Childhood is a special topic in Japan: how children celebrate and play, what rights and, even more importantly, responsibilities they have, how their daily routine is structured, what rules apply at school, how instruments are taught, what rituals are observed in music lessons, and how music is notated – we explore all of this between the musical pieces. Japanese music cherishes the marimba: Keiko Abe composed "Reflections on Japanese Children's Songs II" for marimba duo. The marimba, as a modern instrument of the 20th century, blends beautifully in a duo with the bamboo flute, the shakuhachi. Marimba and shakuhachi perform a composition by their master, Hosan Yamamoto. Dieter Strehly spent a year in Japan studying the shakuhachi – a bamboo flute – while Gaby Zechmeister mastered the koto, a curved zither. The sound of the koto and shakuhachi together is enchanting, and we demonstrate how it is notated. In Japan, the koto is reverently called O-Koto, and the performance begins with a bow. The Austrian premiere of a duo by Japanese composer Dai Fujikura, "Kodama"—a hymn to tree spirits and ghosts—will be performed!

Operetta melodies by Johann Strauss, Emmerich Kálmán, and Franz Lehár are part of the New Favoriten Mandolin Orchestra's regular repertoire. This concert, steeped in tradition, celebrates the orchestra's 75th anniversary and is committed to offering a special program. This includes compositions dedicated to the orchestra over its long history, such as "Mein Favoriten" by Ernst Mifka. You can also look forward to vocal performances by our guests Katharina Jing An Gebauer and Alexander Mutafchiyski, a surprise, and the witty commentary by Victor Kautsch. Eduard Papazoff will conduct the concert.

The sea creatures are preparing for the exciting talent show "Frutti di Mare." Colorful parrotfish, the funny pufferfish Elsi, and many other sea animals are rehearsing intensively. Who can dance and sing the best? Suddenly, "Flapo" appears. She has something important to say. Can her message help save the reef?

A song full of depth, passion, and poetry: works by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss, and Francesco Paolo Tosti span a range from heartfelt Romanticism to Mediterranean melancholy. The program is complemented by tangos from Astor Piazzolla and Pablo Ziegler – a glimpse into modern soundscapes. Between German song tradition and Argentinian longing, an evening of moving intensity unfolds, carried by voice, piano, and accordion – entirely in keeping with the great festival tradition.

Mica Levi moves effortlessly between worlds: from avant-garde band projects to experimental chamber music and her unique sound language created specifically for film. Her acclaimed soundtracks for Under the Skin, Jackie, and Zola have redefined the boundaries of cinematic storytelling—with sound as a protagonist in its own right.

The future prince of song gazed upon the chromaticism of Mozart's "Dissonance Quartet"—and in March 1813, at the age of 16, penned an early stroke of genius in just five days, carefree and bold in its harmony. The 22-year-old Antonín Dvořák composed 18 songs driven by heartbreak—and 22 years later arranged 12 of them for string quartet. Johannes Brahms, too, struggled for a long time before finally achieving his first string quartet, one that he considered truly valid. He had abandoned everything before it. With its selection, the Minetti Quartet offers a fascinating lesson in the quest for chamber music excellence.
