The concert opens with An Act of Resistance by Joel Thomson followed by an American classic,  The Three Black Kings by Duke Ellington, and will conclude with Dmitri Shostakovich’s epic Symphony no. 5.  You won’t want to miss this experience!

Through a fantastic blend of classical and contemporary chamber music, this concert will feature melodies inspired by dance. Alberto Ginastera’s intimate Variaciones concertantes will showcase the extraordinary talent in your Spartanburg Philharmonic, featuring soloists throughout the orchestra culminating in an energetic finale.

Cold weather and chilly winds have taken over, but the Spartanburg Philharmonic Youth Orchestra is ready to warm your hearts with an amazing array of sounds and music. Ben Smith is an esteemed cellist and member of the Hendersonville Symphony, Piedmont Chamber Orchestra, and Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Always looking for new musical adventures, Cellosmith thrives in classical music while also exploring pop, jazz, traditional, and other genres as well.

Edgewise, comprised of Jon Grier, Vee Popat, Ian Bracchitta and Duane Malphrus is a Greenville based ensemble, all veteran performers in many idioms and teachers of many years. Jon Grier is a composer of many works in different genres and may be found at newertunes.com . He is now faculty Emeritus of the Greenville Fine Arts Center where he taught theory, harmony and composition for decades. Vee Popat is a multi-Reed specialist and is also the director of Greenville’s Fine Arts Center. Ian Bracchitta performs in the classical, jazz and popular idioms and is the principal bass of the Spartanburg Philharmonic. He has performed with dozens of national tours and artists at the Peace Center since 1990. He teaches at the SC Governor’s School and Furman University. Duane Malphrus has played with numerous jazz and rock ensembles over the years in the southeast and now has a large private studio of drum students. For jazz fusion fans here in the upstate you might remember Jon, Duane and Ian as members of the band, Oracle, that performed frequently in the tri-state area.

Sister Sadie is a wildfire: raging hot bluegrass combined with breathtaking instrumental drive and awe-inspiring vocals. Comprised of original members Deanie Richardson (fiddle), and Gena Britt (banjo, harmony vocals) and newcomers Hasee Ciaccio (bass), Jaelee Roberts (guitar, lead vocals), and Mary Meyer (mandolin, harmony vocals), Sister Sadie has combined the varied talents of each of the individual women in the lineup to create something that is far more than the sum of its parts. It is a sound uniquely their own. Yes, it’s undeniably classic, hard-driving bluegrass, but it’s much more than just that. Rooted in forceful and tight vocal harmonies, this isn’t your granddaddy’s Appalachian high lonesome sound. This is something far more powerful than that—it’s the sound of the mountains themselves.

Spring brings new life to everything around us. Flowers begin to bloom, showers of rain cleanse our surroundings, and our Youth Orchestra crowns new Concerto Competition winners! This performance is sure to delight as our dedicated students show you just how hard they've worked. The pieces of this concert are like a breath of fresh air as our young musicians close out their 2022 / 2023 season and leave it all on the stage. Concerto Competition Winners will be announced this Fall.

Spring Awakens

From the swirls of sound on urban streets to the poignant strains of traditional songs, our final concert of the season paints an aural portrait of America. Led by guest conductor Jacob Joyce, immerse yourself in a fusion of rhythm, melody, and life fully lived. Explore the vibrant, colorful neighborhoods of New York City with Jesse Montgomery. Your tour continues with a saucy yet poetic ode to the enthusiastic spirit of America illustrated by George Gerswhin and played by Dominic Cheli. Finally, get swept away by the sunny, scenic soundscape created by Charles Ives. Sit back, close your eyes, and let the music transport you.

Each instrument adds its own voice and color to a piece of music and offers composers endless possibilities when creating new themes. Along with guest conductor Lee Mills and soloist Conrad Tao, join us for a concert that examines how composers employ this world of sound and expression to craft the unexpected.

Elgar’s Cello Concerto is undoubtedly one of the most impassioned and emotionally expressive pieces of music ever written, perfect for setting the tone for a romantic Valentine’s Day week. Brought to life by Music Director finalist Nadège Foofat, each note weaves its way into your soul, captivating and moving you to places that defy description. And when played by the equally dazzling and expressive soloist Claire Bryant, checking your own emotions will be no small feat. And while Elgar’s lush piece is the capstone, we begin with Jennifer Higdon’s soaringly tender and contemplative blue cathedral, which will set your soul to singing. The program concludes with Schumann’s illustrative and idyllic Symphony No. 3.

What began as a casual jam session over a decade ago has become one of today’s leaders in the Americana/Bluegrass music world. The venerable Rounder Records immediately signed the band and released their eponymous debut in 2008 that scored their first GRAMMYÒ nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group w/ Vocal for the song “Blue Side Of The Mountain.” Again in 2010, the group’s sophomore effort Reckless, received two more nods for Best Bluegrass Album and Best Country Performance by a Duo of Group with Vocal, courtesy of the universally popular hit “Where Rainbows Never Die.”
