The princess wants a man with something on his mind. Clumsy Hans' two brothers – learned and articulate – prepare to impress with their fine clothes and long words. They take their horses and ride towards the castle. Clumsy Hans is left behind. The odd one in the family. The one who stumbles a little and picks up things from the ditch; an old wooden shoe, a dead crow and mud in his pocket.

But then Salieri and the rest of Vienna and all of Europe meet Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A young, silly, German fool. A vile and shrill-laughing new composer, who is called “Wolfi” by his fiancée. But he has one thing. He is a God-given genius composer, and no one can refuse him. His music enchants everything and everyone, and it makes Salieri’s compositions sound old-fashioned, stiff, boring – and worst of all: mediocre.

He is a photographer, has a beautiful wife and a daughter of almost 14 – the almost blind Hedvig, whom he adores. He also fantasizes about inventing great things. And he has let his old father move in with him and set up an indoor hunting ground with hares and other game up in the attic, so that the old man can still go hunting. There is also a wing-shot wild duck, which Hedvig is very fond of.
