Dee White is a preservationist. On his 2nd album Heart Talkin’, produced by Grammy-winning Nashville visionary Tony Brown, the 28-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Slapout, Alabama, is committed to celebrating the people and things that came before. Over 10 tracks, he sings about mischievous old men at a church potluck dinner, laments the way his lover treats him like a discarded paper cup, and ruminates on the lesser qualities of humanity that are passed on through generations. Heart Talkin’ is the follow-up to Dee’s 2020 debut album Southern Gentleman, which paired him with producers Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and David “Ferg” Ferguson. After beginning his career as a teenager under the encouragement of legendary record man Harold Shedd, Dee has evolved into his own man and artist, touring the world with icons like Alan Jackson and Alison Krauss and with fellow rising stars like Jackson Dean. He represents both the past and the future of country and Americana music.

There was only one prize-winning teenager carrying stones big enough to say thanks, but no thanks to Roy Acuff. Only one son of Kentucky finding a light of inspiration from Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys and catching a fire from Bob Marley and The Wailers. Only one progressive hippie allying with like-minded conspirators, rolling out the New Grass revolution, and then leaving the genre’s torch-bearing band behind as it reached its commercial peak.

When it comes to songwriting, less is more, and simplicity is strength. Just ask Paul Thorn, who’s spent three decades turning soulful grooves and small syllables into songs that pack a big wallop. Maybe he learned the power of minimalism from his years as a pro boxer; maybe it just comes naturally. But whether he’s targeting heads, hearts, hips or the occasional funny bone, he somehow manages to condense large nuggets of wisdom into tight little mantras, the kind embroiderers stitched onto pillows before internet memes existed.

Ben Chapman is a road warrior who has  spent the previous three years in a whirlwind of activity — writing songs for friends like Hayes Carll, Brent Cobb, and Marcus King; making his Grand Ole Opry debut; and releasing three acclaimed albums of country-fried funky-tonk, but nothing could have prepared him for what 2025 would bring him. His new record Feet on Fire captures that period of wild transition, with songs inspired by Chapman’s marriage to fellow songwriter Meg McRee and the arrival of the couple’s first child. On songs like the guitar-driven title track, Chapman mixes Pink Floyd atmosphere with Crazy Horse crunch, showcasing the full spread of his musical influences. Elsewhere, he tips his hat to his southern roots with the laidback, loping “Out in the Country” and the Stax-sized soul ballad “Missing You.” Produced by Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Anderson East, Feet on Fire captures Ben Chapman as we’ve never heard him before: his back against the wall and his heart full, determined not only to meet the challenges up ahead, but to write about the process, too.

Equal parts classic songwriter and modern-day storyteller, Gabe Lee has built his own bridge between country, folk and rock. Lee has been collecting stories for years, both onstage and off. “I used to bartend,” says the Nashville-based songwriter, “which means I was also a cheap therapist for whomever happened to be sitting on the barstool. Whether they were there to celebrate or drink away their problems, I heard about whatever they were going through. It was my job to have that face-to-face interaction — that connection. Being a full-time musician isn’t much different.”  With critically-acclaimed albums like 2019’s farmland, 2020’s Honky-Tonk Hell, and 2022’s The Hometown Kid, Lee created that connection by delivering his own stories to an ever-growing audience.
