Finally making its PUC debut after a pandemic cancellation, the U.K.-based Doric Quartet has been at the helm of a new generation of string quartets, winning countless accolades for its riveting interpretations and inimitable sound. We will have the extraordinary opportunity to get to know these musicians through a new work specifically written for them by Australian composer Brett Dean—a musical exploration of what he describes as the “strangely fascinating and invariably unsettling political climate” of this decade. Yet the Doric Quartet has chosen to complement that work with Beethoven’s optimistic, whimsically exuberant Quartet Op. 18, No. 5, and Schubert’s hauntingly transcendent final quartet — a piece which the Brentano Quartet’s violinist Mark Steinberg once described as ending “with a feeling of acceptance and hope.” In the hands of these exceptional young players, our 130th Concert Classics series will end on a most poignantly uplifting note.

South African soprano Golda Schultz has been gracing the stage of the world’s greatest opera houses—from the Metropolitan Opera to the Vienna State Opera. Equally at home in leading operatic roles as she is as a soloist with the world’s foremost orchestras and in the most venerated recital halls, she has quickly become a leading voice in a new generation of star singers. For her Princeton University Concerts debut, she brings the extraordinary warmth of her voice to a program hailed as “a love-letter to women in music” exploring themes of love, nature, folklore and belief from a distinctly female perspective. Discussing the program’s curation, she shares: “Emilie Mayer, whose music was never recorded, was a genius on the level with Beethoven, but she was forgotten the day after she died in 1883. Nadia Boulanger became one of the greatest pedagogues with a touch that defined American culture. Even when we forget these women, what they’ve done still remains.”

“Jonathan and I share the deep conviction that you can never really know all there is to know about great music,” remarks Mitsuko Uchida, one of the world’s most revered Schubert interpreters, “and that it’s worth spending your whole life trying to know a little more.” Perhaps that is one of the many reasons that we cannot get enough of these two beloved pianists, both of whom have made multiple appearances on our series. Now making their PUC debut as a duo in a rare joint recital, the legendary pair invites us to try to know a little more about Schubert with a program singularly focused on this composer, whose many works for piano four-hands were written for friends gathered at evening salons. And so we will have our own “Schubertiade,” as these events came to be known, in the ultimate realization of PUC’s tagline: “the world’s most celebrated musicians among friends.”

Our resident ensemble of Princeton University performance faculty, distinguished guest artists and supremely talented students takes us back to January 14, 1914 France when Maurice Ravel’s Trois poèmes de Mallarmé, a sequence of three art songs based on poems by Stéphane Mallarmé for soprano, two flutes, two clarinets, piano, and string quartet, received its world premiere. The ensemble recreates the program of that concert, featuring works by Ravel’s French contemporaries.

It is quite rare on our series for an artist to make consecutive appearances from season to season. Yet Víkingur Ólafsson’s stunning debut on our 2022-23 season made a return appearance paramount. J.S. Bach is especially close to the Icelandic virtuoso’s heart—his album of the composer’s music for the Deutsche Grammophon label won both Best Instrumental Album and Album of the Year at the 2019 BBC Music Magazine Awards and was streamed hundreds of millions of times. “When you open a score of Bach’s music, a paradox immediately reveals itself: the music is incredibly rich and strikingly sparse,” the pianist shares. “The musical structures are very detailed, but there are hardly any indications as to how you should go about shaping them…it is simply unavoidable for the performer not to become something of a co-creator.” All 75,000+ notes of Bach’s endlessly inventive keyboard masterpiece will come alive in a completely new way in the hands of this inimitable pianist, whose own ingenuity makes him well-poised to co-create alongside the master.

Víkingur Ólafsson, Piano

Considered to be “the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times) with the touch of Bill Evans, range of Keith Jarrett, and innovation of Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau is one of the greatest musical giants of our time. The 2020 GRAMMY-winner is perhaps most well-known for his stunning improvisations that transcend genre through their combination of jazz exploration, classical romanticism, and pop allure. His latest suite, 14 Reveries for Piano, brings together the dichotomy of his musical personality as both improviser and structural genius – the work is a meditation on the space a composer leaves between specific directions that lets the beauty of the music reveal itself, while still allowing new discovery. As he most often performs with his celebrated trio, this solo recital is a rare opportunity to hear this legendary pure voice as both musician and composer uninterrupted.

Brad Mehldau, Piano

One of the most remarkable individuals of our time, pianist Hélène Grimaud is as renowned for her heartfelt, poetic interpretations and dazzling technical prowess as she is for her profound work as a conservationist and human rights activist—distinctions for which she received the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest order of merit. She is an artist who defies all categorization, and fittingly brings a program that celebrates the unexpected for her long-awaited PUC debut—Beethoven’s most intimate yet revolutionary Sonata Op. 109, and Busoni’s transformative transcription of Bach’s beloved Chaconne, intended to “remove the dust of tradition.” At the core of the program are two pillars of the piano repertoire by Brahms, a composer especially close to Grimaud’s heart for his ability to, in her words, “always create a moment when time stops.” We have no doubt that she will cast her own timeless spell through every note of this unmissable recital, sharing her trademark ability to make these familiar works sound new once more.

Weymar is the creator and curator of Interwoven Stories and the Tiny Pricks Project. In 2016, she launched Interwoven Stories as part of her residency at the Arts Council of Princeton. The project quickly spanned the globe as more than 400 stitchers from across the United States, Canada, and Syria contributed hand-embroidered “pages” to Interwoven Stories. We invite you! to participate in the newest chapter of this initiative that captures community stories of Healing with Music, which will culminate in a public exhibition in the spring. “Oncology wards, more than anywhere else I know, are music-less places,” wrote Suleika Jaouad as part of Life, Interrupted, the Emmy award-winning New York Times column and video series she wrote while hospitalized for leukemia shortly after graduating from Princeton University in 2010. Jon Batiste changed that by bringing his band to visit her oncology ward, “its inhabitants rejoicing in a temporary timeout, losing themselves to the beauty and healing power of music.” Now married, the New York Times bestselling author and multiple Grammy Award-winning musician together launch a new season of our “Healing with Music” series with a conversation, moderated by journalist Deborah Amos, permeated by live performance of works meaningful to Suleika’s recovery, about music’s role through illness and how they have managed to convert isolation into art.

Whatever your preconceptions of the harpsichord may be, Jean Rondeau will undoubtedly shatter them all as he takes us to Parnassus, the mythological mountain home of the Muses. Leading the charge of a new generation of keyboardists (including as a founding member of the Jupiter Ensemble, which made a rousing debut in our 2022-23 season), he makes his inaugural PUC appearance with a program exploring the stunning range of the harpsichord. Describing themselves as “your friendly neighborhood string quartets with above average amounts of beard,” the Grammy Award-nominated Danish String Quartet combines a down-to-earth sensibility with an astounding unity of sound that has placed them firmly within the ranks of the world’s finest string quartets. The three Danes and one Norwegian return for their third appearance on our series with a program that showcases their uncanny ability to combine finesse and spontaneity – blurring the line between classical repertoire and folk tunes by bringing a sense of urgency and purity to every note they play. By pairing arrangements of Scandinavian folk music with the court dance that inspired Purcell’s kaleidoscopic variations, the gypsy-inflected spirit of one of Haydn’s first quartet masterpieces, and the musical tribute Shostakovich created in memory of his first wife, the ensemble will remind us of the humanity at the core of all music-making.

“Two Danes and a Swede walked into a pub…no, not the opening line of a joke; rather, the beginning of a musical collaboration that has produced some of the most exciting new music to emanate from Scandinavia,” asserts Folk Radio. One of those Danes is none other than violinist Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen of the Danish String Quartet, appearing on our Concert Classics Series later this fall. With astounding acrobatics on violin, accordion/piano and the cittern (a relative of the mandolin), the young trio performs original, genre-bending compositions that blend vibrant Danish, Swedish, and Icelandic folk traditions with influences from jazz, classical, and pop music spheres—pushing the Nordic sound into an imaginative new realm. “The name Dreamers’ Circus is based on associations,” explains Sørensen. “Think of the vivid colors we associate with childhood memories of the Circus. Remember the magic of entering the tent as a child — the way our senses were engaged. In our music, we always strive to invoke a place of freedom, somewhere for our imagination to play in and a space for dreaming.”

30 years ago, the late author and Princeton University Professor Toni Morrison won the Nobel Prize in Literature—the first native-born American to receive that honor since John Steinbeck. Princeton University Concerts joins the Princeton University Library and the McCarter Theatre Center in a campus-wide celebration of this anniversary by commissioning MacArthur Fellow and three-time Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist and composer Cecile McLorin Salvant to create a brand-new work inspired by Morrison’s archives, which are housed at the university and will be on display at Firestone Library in a much-anticipated exhibition in the spring. Shortly after Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien first began their musical partnership in 2005 as members of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, The Times declared that “both of these players have the potential to conquer the world.” And this is precisely what the pair proceeded to do—consistently topping classical charts, receiving coveted awards for their recordings, and enjoying devoted followings across five continents. The duo finally makes their Princeton University Concerts debut within the remarkable intimacy of Richardson Auditorium, a space in which their uncanny ability to fuse any sense of distance between their respective instruments and their audience will be all the more heightened. For this occasion they bring us Schumann’s first two violin sonatas interspersed with the calm beauty of a work that Mendelssohn wrote when he was just 14-years-old, and Webern’s pithy and lyrical early masterpiece.

Making her debut on our Concert Classics series in April on a modern instrument, violinist Alina Ibragimova first comes with an ensemble that brings “a shock to the ears of the best kind” (The Observer). Playing standing up on gut stringed instruments with historical bows, the Chiaroscuro Quartet performs music of the Classical and early Romantic periods with an utterly unique sound that has brought audiences to their feet across the world. The quartet’s three leading ladies, and one leading gent, bring us a program rooted in love: two string quartets written after their respective composers fell under the spell of the leading ladies in their own lives. Having experienced the group’s revelatory approach to this music, you are bound to fall under their spell as well!

Chiaroscuro String Quartet

Lawrence Brownlee has been a regular at the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, and the Royal Opera House—and now, back by popular demand, at Princeton University Concerts. His voice—“an instrument of great beauty and expression” (NPR Music)—has been as celebrated for its power on the world’s greatest opera stages as it has been for its leadership within conversations about activism and diversity within classical music. The captivating tenor combines both talents into a new song cycle championing black writers and composers, presenting texts drawn from the Harlem Renaissance set to music by today’s premiere composers including Jasmine Barnes, Margaret Bonds, Shawn Ohkpeblo, and Damien Sneed.

Our resident ensemble of Princeton University performance faculty, distinguished guest artists and supremely talented students offer Sunday afternoon concerts of mixed chamber works.

“Every day of my life that I am allowed to play Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and the music of our own time,” says piano legend Mitsuko Uchida, “is a gift from somewhere. If heaven existed, it’s heaven.” For us, to have this extraordinary musician back to perform Beethoven’s last three piano sonatas is, indeed, a musical heaven—an exquisite combination of monumental music performed by one of the most revered artists of our time. Of all of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, the final three are especially hallowed for the astonishing emotional ground that they cover, from utter anguish to complete exhilaration, communicated through breathtaking virtuosity. To hear Beethoven’s final thoughts on the piano sonata as a genre in Uchida’s venerated hands is a defining moment in PUC’s 129-year history.

19th-century composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov once said that “all modern music owes everything to J. S. Bach.” In the hands of 29-year-old trailblazing violinist Alexi Kenney, the recipient of a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant and 2020 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, this concept takes on an extended timelessness within the framework of 21st-century music. The spiritual overtones of Bach’s music transform within the echoes of chanting monks incorporated into Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Du Yun’s recent work for violin and tape; Bach’s ability to speak to the universality of grief deepens the poignancy of Matthew Burtner’s musical meditation on climate change and the future of life on our planet. As Mr. Kenney thoughtfully shares: “my hope is that through the course of the program, each piece enlivens those around it, framing Bach in a new light and placing contemporary violin works in context—and showing that art need not be defined by era to express our shared humanity.”

“A living legend” (The New Yorker) within jazz’s piano pantheon, fifteen-time GRAMMY nominee Fred Hersch was also one of the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz musicians. Amidst the demands of an internationally celebrated career, he spent several months in an AIDS-related coma in 2008. And yet, as he shared in an interview on NPR’s “Fresh Air:”
He makes his Princeton University Concerts debut, as part of our new Healing with Music series, to discuss this profound relationship to music and share “Breath by Breath”—a suite of nine original compositions written during the pandemic, inspired by his longtime practice of mindfulness meditation. Through this combination of performance and conversation with the audience, we will come together to breathe in the life-affirming power of music, guided by an endlessly-inspiring musician who is a living testament to music’s ability to heal.

Get to know legendary pianist Fred Hersch—making his PUC debut on our new “Healing with Music” series—through a screening of the award-winning documentary about his life by Charlotte Lagarde and Carrie Lozano. A post-screening discussion with Fred Hersch will follow, moderated by his student, PUC alumnus and local composer/pianist Gregg Kallor.
The Ballad of Fred Hersch is an intimate portrait of one of today’s foremost jazz pianists. With more than 30 albums and 15 Grammy nominations, Hersch is internationally revered in jazz circles as a master improviser. A maverick in music and in life, he was the first jazz musician to come out as gay and HIV-positive in the early 1990s, and he miraculously survived a two-month coma in 2008. Both exacting and full of love, this documentary captures Hersch’s creative process as he does double duty as a workaday jazzman and first-time theater producer—turning his tragedies into triumphal art.

The Ballad of Fred Hersch

Superstar Joyce DiDonato invites us back to the Garden of Eden through this groundbreaking, through-performed, theatrical program that spans four centuries of music exploring our relationship with the natural world. Joined by the award-winning Il Pomo d’Oro orchestra conducted by Zefira Valova, she lends her celebrated voice to questions at the very core of our existence as channeled through composers including Handel, Gluck, Wagner, Mahler, Ives, Copland, and Oscar-winner Rachel Portman (Emma). “With each passing day,” DiDonato shares, “I trust more and more in the perfect balance, astonishing mystery and guiding force of the natural world around us, how much Mother Nature has to teach us. EDEN is an invitation to return to our roots and to explore whether or not we are connecting as profoundly as we can to the pure essence of our being, to create a new EDEN from within and plant seeds of hope for the future.” The evening will also feature a guest appearance by the Princeton Girlchoir.

Joyce DiDonato: EDEN

Ronald Braunstein was on a trajectory to being one of the world’s leading conductors. When he made his diagnosis of bipolar disorder public, he was shunned by the classical music community. Terminated from his last position with a community orchestra and nearly destitute, Braunstein decided to start an orchestra for people like himself: the Me2/Orchestra. Me2/Orchestra is changing the lives of these musicians in ways they never imagined. Roughly half the musicians are living with diagnoses of bipolar disorder, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, associative disorder, borderline personality, depression, and addiction. The rest have no diagnoses. And, that’s the point. Me2/Orchestra is a groundbreaking, transformative model for erasing mental health stigma where acceptance and understanding are the priority. The film follows Braunstein and several of the musicians for two years—capturing their setbacks and the accomplishments. It culminates in a joyous concert combining both orchestras for the first time—a triumph for Braunstein, who thought he might never conduct again, the musicians and the audience—who will never think about mental illness in the same way.
An extension of our new “Healing with Music” series, the film screening is the first event in an afternoon of free activities dedicated to recognizing the intersection between mental health and music. Following the screening, all amateur musicians are invited to join members of the Me2/Orchestra, conducted by Ronald Braunstein, in a stigma-free community Chamber Jam, which will be followed by a group reflection on music’s role in our lives.

Amateur musicians of all ages and levels are invited to join members of the Me2/Orchestra, conducted by Ronald Braunstein, in a stigma-free community play-along of Beethoven’s iconic 5th Symphony.
The Chamber Jam will culminate in a group discussion addressing the intersection of music and mental health, facilitated by the Me2/Orchestra — the world’s first classical music organization created for individuals with mental illnesses and the people who support them. Come at 1PM for a free documentary film screening about the Me2/Orchestra.
