Copenhagen's DR Koncerthuset is set to become a haven for classical music lovers with a series of remarkable events celebrating the works of Johannes Brahms. Experience the enigmatic genius of Dmitri Shostakovich in a series of breathtaking concerts across Denmark. From Odense and Aarhus to Copenhagen, immerse yourself in the emotional and dramatic tales spun by one of the 20th century's greatest composers. From the poignant Symphony No. 10 in Odense to the intimate Piano Trio No. 2 in Aarhus, and the exhilarating Symphony No. 14 in Copenhagen, each event offers a unique glimpse into Shostakovich's multifaceted musical world.

After the premiere of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, a critic wrote that the symphony resembled a "wounded dragon writhing in agony before bleeding to death in the fourth movement". There were so many unexpected musical jokes in the new symphony that the critics did not know what to think. Today, fortunately, we know how to appreciate Beethoven's harsh humor.

It is life itself that is painted in tones when the young comedic conductor Tarmo Peltokoski gives his first concert in Denmark. 'Also sprach Zarathustra' opens with an overwhelming sunrise fanfare and ends in metaphysical ecstasy, and in Shostakovich's Symphony No. 14, life and death circle each other in an ever-stronger embrace

Tjajkovskijs symfoni nr. 6 skulle blive hans sidste værk, og der hviler noget skæbnesvangert over hele værket. Følelserne går højt, lige fra den mystiske åbning til musikken trækker sig tilbage i et hjerteskærende smukt mørke i sidste sats. Tjajkovskij sagde selv, at han havde lagt hele sin sjæl i symfonien, og den står som et af hans mest personlige og følelsesladede værker.

Kun tre år senere skrev Alexander Skrjabin sin eneste klaverkoncert, som ligesom meget andet af hans tidlige klavermusik er gennemsyret af Chopinsk elegance, med en personlig indadvendthed og inderlig skønhed.

This concert opens with the graceful elegance of Mozart's
Eine kleine Nachtmusik, followed by two of his most
virtuosic and poignant arias. Then Scriabin's memorable
Symphony No. 2 takes over, its otherworldly ecstasy and
colourful orchestration teeming with powerful highlights.

The Enigma Variations were the great breakthrough of the romantic English composer Edward Elgar. The work is a series of portraits of Elgar's circle of friends, where he charmingly captures the personality of his friends in tones - not entirely without a little twinkle in his eye.

Saraste & Anne Sofie von Otter

Finnish mythology and the great  Kalevala epic were a great inspiration for Sibelius. In his Lemmikäinen suite, he portrays Lemmikäinen, a young, heroic warrior and one of the most important figures in the Finnish national epic. The music follows Lemmikäinen on an adventure, to a distant island, down into the realm of the dead and finally his triumphant return.

Bernstein wrote his Serenade for Violin inspired by Plato's Symposion , where different speakers praise love in their own way. The contrasts are great, from lyrical fervor to biting sarcasm. The soloist is the versatile violinist Carolin Widmann, who is equally at home in newly written music as in the classical core repertoire.

The German-American violinist Augustin Hadelich has a close relationship with the DR Symphony Orchestra, and it is always a great experience when he performs with the orchestra. His warm, clear sound and direct playing hits the listener right in the heart, with a rare musical nerve and presence.

Here is a unique opportunity to experience star soprano Danielle de Niese in a portrayal of female characters pushed to their extreme limits. In Purcell's tragic baroque opera, Queen Dido must die for her love for Aeneas. In Weill's burlesque, cabaret-inspired satire, two sisters must sacrifice all their principles to get ahead in the world.

Brahms could write for choir and orchestra like few others. Hans  Nänie is a heartbreakingly beautiful meditation on the transience of life, where song and instruments merge into a higher unity. In Brahms' Altrapsody, suffering is transformed into heavenly ecstasy, with the men's voices in the role of a heavenly choir. The soloist is the French-Canadian alto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, who has embellished music from baroque to romantic with her darkly glowing voice.

Mozart never completed his Great Mass in C minor. But what he managed to write is among his most beautiful and magnificent music. At the first performance, his wife Constanze was one of the sopranos and sang the divinely beautiful aria "Et incarnatus est", an aria that makes time stand still. In the Concert Hall, it will be the American soprano Liv Redpath, who has previously impressed with her unusually clear voice.

Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 has the reputation of being the world's most difficult piano concerto. The technical demands are sky-high with light runs and resounding chords, but the concert also requires enormous musicality and communication skills. Tonight's soloist, the Georgian star Khatia Buniatishvili, has both in abundance.

Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 is one of the Russian composer's best works. Melodic intensity meets a virtuosity unlike any other, with cascades of chords and effortless elegance. It is demanding music for both the orchestra and soloist Khatia Buniatishvili, but also a work that can fill the heart with the greatest emotions.

There is an indomitable and yes, unquenchable vitality that characterizes Nielsen's Symphony No. 4. The DR Symphony Orchestra and Fabio Luisi's latest recording of Nielsen's best-known symphony has attracted great attention internationally, and it has been written into the program when the orchestra embarks on its anniversary tour .

In Aftenland, Bent Sørensen mixes the nocturnal silence and view he remembers from growing up in Zealand with New York's nightlife seen from above. Silence and activity go into each other, and melodic fragments emerge like lights in the night.

The Swedish chamber orchestra and conductor Martin Fröst have Mozart's music in their blood, and this program shows both Mozart and the musicians at their best. These are works that touch the listener, regardless of whether you know every measure or just enjoy Mozart's wonderful music.

Shostakovich's music has it all – an expressiveness of its own that can run from burlesque antics to teeth-grinding fury from one bar to the next. It is powerful music that takes the audience on an emotional journey from the first note, and with its demands for virtuosity and exuberant orchestral language speaks directly to the very best side of the orchestra's musicians.

The strong opening chorus in Carmina Burana is iconic, and is, among other things, known as the dramatic opening music to the television show X Factor. Here, the goddess of fate, Fortuna, is both praised and condemned, and then things go wild with both lively drinking songs, beautiful declarations of love and even a swan that is burned alive!

Conductor Alondra de la Parra specializes in Latin American music, and has worked closely with composer Arturo Marquéz for many years. His music has its roots in Mexican folk music, with its fierce dance rhythms and breathtaking melodies.

In Strauss's masterful  Ein Heldenleben, a young hero sets out, full of courage and lyrical exuberance. Out in the world, he meets both enemies and love before he can finally retire, fed up with days. Richard Strauss may have seen himself as the musical hero when he wrote this work – quotations from his own works keep popping up, especially when the hero is portrayed as a peacemaker and benefactor.

"Gillam strikes barren!" wrote The Guardian about Jess Gillam's latest solo album, which went straight to number one on the classical charts. Now the dynamic saxophonist can be experienced for the first time in the DR Koncerthuset. She brings Anna Clynes' alternately violent and lyrical saxophone concerto  Glasslands , inspired by Irish mythology.

Come with the DR Symphony Orchestra and Jakob Stegelmann on the third and final symphonic journey through musical universes and cinematic galaxies – all the way to the outermost asteroids and back to Earth again.

Commissioning new works and thereby helping to renew classical music is a matter close to the heart of the DR Symphony Orchestra. This evening's first performance is signed by Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen, a deeply personal voice in the Danish composer milieu, whose musical directness and skinless, intense works have made a great impression on listeners and artists alike.

Smetana's great tone poem  My Fatherland a musical introduction to Czech culture and history. It begins at Vyšehrad Castle, the old seat of the Bohemian kings, and continues along the great Vltava River that flows below the old castle. In the last movement, the magical mountain Blanik is depicted, which contains a sleeping army. When the need is greatest, the sleeping knights will wake up and save the Czech Republic from the enemy.

The legendary Herbert Blomstedt returns. As Honorary
Conductor, his interpretations let the music speak from the
heart, revealing deeply personal beauty. Now he's back
with Beethoven's divinely dancing Symphony No. 7. After
Blomstedt's last visit, one of our musicians said, "It's as if
your heart has grown a little bigger.”

Musical storytelling joy is one of the characteristics of this evening's conductor, Finnish Pekka Kuusisto. In the evening's masterpiece  Mother Goose Tales, the French composer Maurice Ravel gives a new and resonant form to fairy tales by the author Charles Perrault, where figures such as Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast appear in Ravel's unmistakably glittering orchestral attire.

As chief conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the conductor Eva Ollikainen has a close relationship with the Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Much of Thorvaldsdottir's music is inspired by Iceland's unique nature and the natural forces that bubble up to the surface there. Catamorphosis is a work torn between opposing forces: the natural and the unnatural, utopia and dystopia, disaster and hope.

Barbara Hannigan is a musician and artist who is not afraid to go her own way. The music she performs, both as conductor and singer – and not least when she does both at the same time – cuts across eras and genres. The evening's program begins thoughtfully, but ends with an exuberant cornucopia of musical energy.
