In the second symphony concert, we welcome another outstanding concert soloist: the Swedish soprano Maria Bengtsson, who has performed at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and the Berlin State Opera, among others, under the baton of Kirill Petrenko, Daniel Barenboim, Simone Young, Philippe Jordan, Vladimir Jurovsky, Riccardo Muti, Sebastian Weigle, and many others. When Mozart referred to Joseph Haydn as the "father, guide, and friend" of his string quartets, he was alluding to the great model of the Quartets Op. 33, which were printed at the end of 1781 and with which Haydn had ushered in a new era for the genre. The six String Quartets Op. 33 are considered the beginning of Viennese Classicism; they are also called the "Russian Quartets" because of their dedication to Grand Duke Paul of Russia. At the beginning of Quartet No. 3, the first violin enters with a kind of bird call over pulsating C major chords, from which the nickname "Bird Quartet" derives.

After visiting an exhibition showcasing paintings by his deceased friend, the composer Modest Mussorgsky wrote his famous work "Pictures at an Exhibition" in 1874. The expressive paintings by Viktor Hartmann inspired Mussorgsky to set them to music: to translate colors, figures, and moods into sounds, thus bringing the artworks to life. Pictures became musical pieces. But can these musical pieces become pictures again today? We'll find out: The State Theatre's Symphony Orchestra brings Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" to the stage in a large orchestral version, while artists paint live to the music. One family, two languages, one hundred years, and more than two thousand kilometers between Istanbul and Gelsenkirchen. Akin Emanuel Şipal tells the story of a family in which the Silesian great-grandmother once attacked the Turkish grandfather with an umbrella. The son-in-law returns to Turkey as an author and translates the great works of German literature. The next generation is torn between the two countries. Added to this is much of what Turks think they know about Germans and Germans about Turks. The author's alter ego gets entangled in all of this. "Mother Father Country" paints a fast-paced and subtly humorous picture of a world where cultures blend and become something new. Pettersson and Findus, the quirky protagonists of the famous Swedish children's book series, are inseparable and lead a peaceful life on their farm. That is, until Caruso, the vain rooster from the neighboring farm, disturbs their blissful solitude while fleeing the soup pot. Caruso crows incessantly, playing tunes and shamelessly turning the heads of the farm's hens. Everyone loves Caruso. Everyone except Findus. The tame cat's spirit is shaken. Findus fears for his position as Pettersson's favorite, and when he's had enough, he hatches a cunning plan.

Friends Bérenger and Jean are chatting on a café terrace one Sunday afternoon when suddenly a rhinoceros charges across the square. While everyone present discusses the incident in astonishment and horror, only Bérenger remains unmoved. The next day at the office, the event is hotly debated – until Madame Boeuf bursts in, delivers her husband's sick note, and breathlessly reports that a rhinoceros followed her. Soon after, it rushes up the stairs and is identified by Madame Boeuf as her husband. Gradually, more and more inhabitants of the provincial town transform into angry pachyderms. And suddenly, they are in the majority. Anyone who wants to belong also transforms – "one has to move with the times, after all."

It's hard to say, because at the same time as his food strike, Jonas also refuses all communication. While his parents try unsuccessfully to deal with their headstrong son, his sister turns him into a social media star and portrays him as a martyr of a global protest movement. Village judge Adam finds himself in a predicament: the case of a broken jug is brought before him. The plaintiff, Marthe Rull, accuses Ruprecht, her daughter Eve's fiancé, of forcibly entering Eve's room and breaking the offending vessel. Ruprecht, in turn, claims to have caught a stranger red-handed, who escaped undetected by jumping out of the window. What no one suspects at first, however, is that the culprit is none other than Village Judge Adam himself. He had been harassing Eve the previous evening, was surprised by Ruprecht, and knocked over the fateful jug in his flight. What to do? Although Adam becomes increasingly entangled in his web of lies as the trial progresses, he brazenly tries to shift the blame onto himself until the very end…

He fights against imaginary enemies and illusions, but at his core, always for his true ideals. He is constantly searching for his equally imagined great love, Dulcinea, an ideal he projects onto all women. He actually helps the young Kitri escape a forced marriage and marry her true love. He survives all his adventures unscathed—until, at the end of his journey, he encounters his own reflection and recognizes his self-deception.

Human or monster? In Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, the young scientist Victor Frankenstein pursues an ambitious goal: he assembles a human being from various body parts and attempts to bring it to life. The result of his experiment, however, is decidedly ambivalent. When he finally comes face to face with his "creation," he is overcome with horror and flees from his own creation. Is it a demonic monster, born of hubris and obsessive scientific curiosity? Or is this being, brought into the world without its own intervention, also a vulnerable creature, yearning for love, affection, and friendship?

When a pilot is forced to make an emergency landing in the middle of the Sahara, he is astonished to find a little prince approaching him and asking him to draw a sheep. It quickly becomes clear that the little prince comes from a distant planet. He left after a quarrel with a rose and has been traveling through space ever since. He meets all sorts of inhabitants of other planets and learns about their longings, but feels like a stranger everywhere he goes. After a touching encounter with a fox who reveals a secret to him, it is time for the little prince to return home: to his planet with its three volcanoes and the rose he loves.

In "Origin," Saša Stanišić embarks on a quest to trace his roots: born in 1978 in the small town of Višegrad in the former Yugoslavia, he fled the Bosnian War with his parents at the age of 14, ending up in Heidelberg in the 1990s. Poetically, with powerful language and subtle humor, Stanišić recounts the adventures of his childhood in a soon-to-disappear country, his growing up as a teenager in Germany, his search for identity, and a motley crew of ancestors: his great-aunt Zagorka, who set off at 15 to become a cosmonaut; his great-grandfather, a raftsman who couldn't swim; and above all, his grandmother Kristina, who is increasingly losing her memories of the past. A warmhearted and whimsical kaleidoscope full of quirky stories and profound truths.

How does a child react when their mother no longer finds life worth living? They write a list of everything that's great in the world and hope their mother reads it: 1. Ice cream, 2. Water fights, 3. Staying up later than usual and watching TV, 4. The color yellow. And while the child writes, hoping their mother's depression will end and everything will get better, they grow into a young person who studies, falls in love, gets married, and gets divorced: a person who lives a life with all its ups and downs, always finding a reason to add to the list. Over time, the list grows into a life document that soon contains a million entries.

The invisible becomes an obsession until one day he is confronted with the realization: "I can no longer will, but someone wills for me." "Le Horla" is perhaps Guy de Maupassant's best-known fantastical novella, an early masterpiece of psychological horror literature. Matthias Brandt and Jens Thomas use Maupassant's story and other texts as the basis for their latest collaboration. The soundtrack and songs are by Jens Thomas. With "Dämon" (Demon), they continue their collaborative work from "Psycho."
