Two days before winter break, Nate, Ida, and Rosa are assigned to write a research paper that chronicles how African Americans have celebrated Christmas throughout history. Granddad is immediately interested and summons the magical Soul Train to transport them all into the past so they can witness, firsthand, how Christmas was celebrated. When Dean, a young professional, and Danya, an aspiring singer, go on a refreshingly candid first date, they keep it real about the dynamics of a potential interracial relationship. Get Ready is an exploration of the joys and pains that many African American musicians grappled with when music shifted from 1950’s doo-wop into what is now considered mainstream pop + rhythm + blues. The Doves, a fictional group, are well past their heyday but are preparing to “get ready” for their great comeback in hopes of recapturing the bliss of days gone by. The Doves will help The Ensemble Theatre get ready to celebrate it’s 50th Anniversary season!
