The Bay Area Rainbow Symphony (BARS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established in 2008 with the mission of promoting and supporting LGBTQ musicians and composers. BARS is recognized for its commitment to artistic excellence and its role in community building within the performing arts sector. The organization is dedicated to creating a space where LGBTQ artists can achieve their artistic goals with confidence, pride, and creativity. BARS has a strong focus on diversity and inclusivity, striving to create a diverse orchestra membership that reflects various backgrounds in terms of race, ethnicity, age, gender, and sexual orientation. The orchestra is committed to performing music by at least one LGBTQ composer or soloist in every concert and ensures that at least one piece composed by a woman is included in each performance. Notable works performed by BARS include compositions by Florence Price, Ethel Smyth, and Manuel de Falla. The leadership of BARS includes a range of talented individuals who contribute to the organization's success. Dawn Harms serves as the Music Director and has a diverse career as a chamber musician, violin soloist, concertmaster, and conductor. The Board of Directors is composed of individuals with a passion for music and a dedication to the organization's mission, including Laurence Lewis (President), Gene Nakajima (Vice President), Timothy Offensend (Secretary), and several other directors who bring their expertise to the organization. BARS's history is marked by significant milestones and collaborations. The organization's inaugural concert took place on June 8, 2008, and since then, BARS has been elected into the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, achieved 501(c)(3) non-profit status, and performed at prestigious venues such as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Davies Symphony Hall. BARS has also collaborated with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus on multiple occasions, including the world premiere of Andrew Lippa's "I Am Harvey Milk." Under the baton of various artistic directors, including Daniel Canosa and Dawn Harms, BARS has continued to grow and expand its reach. The organization has been involved in various community events and educational initiatives, demonstrating its commitment to using music as a tool for education and personal enrichment. BARS's resilience and adaptability were evident when it returned to the stage for a sell-out live performance after a pause due to the COVID pandemic, showcasing works by composers such as Corigliano, Beethoven, and Florence Price. The organization continues to redefine the orchestra experience for audiences and members alike, emphasizing music's potential for creating a more inclusive and diverse community.
