Phoenix Chamber Music Society

Phoenix, AZ, United States

The Phoenix Chamber Music Society (PCMS) is a distinguished cultural organization that has been a part of the Phoenix, Arizona community since its incorporation in 1960. The society launched its inaugural season in 1961 with a series of four concerts held at the Phoenix Art Museum, featuring performances by members of the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. The success of the initial season was evident as the following year saw the society hosting three touring groups to play for sold-out audiences at Longview Elementary School. As the society's popularity grew, it soon moved its concerts to the Kerr Studio. One of the pivotal figures in the society's history was Louise Kerr (1891-1977), an ardent chamber music enthusiast and one of the founders of the PCMS. Alongside co-founder Lewis J. Ruskin, Kerr's passion and dedication played a significant role in the society's development. By 1975, the Phoenix Chamber Music Society had outgrown the Kerr Studio and made the transition to the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, further expanding its reach and influence. The society has continued to evolve and, in celebration of its 60th season, concerts are held at the Central United Methodist Church, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to presenting the finest chamber music to the Valley's audiences. The PCMS is led by Executive Director Janet Green, who remains accessible to the public and can be contacted during business hours at the society's office. In addition to its concert series, the Phoenix Chamber Music Society has introduced a new feature called Pre-Concert Chats. These chats are hosted by Marlene Rausch-Phinney, a prominent figure in the local music scene, from 7:00 to 7:15 p.m. before concerts. Rausch-Phinney, a violinist with a rich background as a soloist and leadership roles in various orchestras including the Phoenix Symphony and the Arizona Opera, shares intriguing facts about the evening's artists during these sessions. Her extensive experience in the field of music also includes being an Artist in Residence for the Arizona Commission on the Arts and serving as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Chamber Music Studies at Grand Canyon University. Rausch-Phinney's involvement with the PCMS extends to her position on the Board and Artistic Committee, and she also contributes as a board member of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Arizona District auditions committee. The Phoenix Chamber Music Society has become a cornerstone of the region's cultural life, fostering an appreciation for chamber music through its performances and educational initiatives. With a history spanning over six decades, the society continues to enrich the cultural fabric of Phoenix and inspire new generations of music lovers.
