Eureka Symphony

Bayside, CA, United States

The Eureka Symphony is a notable community orchestra with a rich history that spans over three decades. It was founded when a passionate group of local musicians, led by conductor Kenneth Hannaford, came together to perform Johannes Brahms’ Requiem. Since its inception, the symphony has flourished under the leadership of several important figures. Valgene Phillips (1996-1998) and Kenneth Ayoob (1998-2002) provided essential resources and artistic direction, which helped stabilize the orchestra and prepare it for further growth. The current phase of development has been under the guidance of Music Director Carol Jacobson, who has been at the helm since 2003. Throughout its history, the Eureka Symphony has performed in various venues, solidifying its place as a cultural mainstay within the community. In 2007, the symphony established a partnership with the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts (ACPA), which has become its primary venue. Although there was a brief hiatus from ACPA during the 2013-14 season, the orchestra soon returned to this historic location. The Eureka Symphony has also fostered a strong collaborative relationship with North Coast Dance, which manages the ACPA. The Arkley Center for the Performing Arts, home to the Eureka Symphony, has its own storied past. Originally opened as the Sweasey Theatre on December 16, 1920, it underwent several changes and renovations, particularly after fires in 1929 and 1943 caused significant damage. After serving as a movie palace for many years, it closed in 1973 and was converted into Daly's Department store. The building was eventually abandoned and fell into disrepair, becoming an eyesore until it was purchased by the Arkley family in 2003. They undertook extensive renovation and restoration work, and in 2007, the venue was reborn as the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts. The Eureka Symphony's success is attributed to the dedicated leadership of its Board of Directors and the unwavering support of the community. This support ensures the orchestra's continued ability to provide high-quality music that is enjoyed and valued by people of all ages, enriching both the musicians involved and the community at large.
