The Downey Symphonic Society is a cultural institution that was established in 1958 by a collective of community-minded individuals with the intention of bringing symphonic music to the Greater Downey area. This society oversees the Downey Symphony Orchestra, which has become a cornerstone of the local arts scene, enriching the community through its performances and educational initiatives. The Downey Symphony Orchestra's mission is to serve and engage the diverse population of the region by offering exceptional live performances of symphonic and orchestral music. Additionally, the organization is committed to providing educational programs that are accessible to audiences of all ages, fostering an appreciation for the arts and nurturing future generations of musicians and music lovers. At the helm of the Downey Symphony Orchestra is Music Director Sharon Lavery, who has been leading the ensemble since 2007. Sharon Lavery is a distinguished conductor with a rich career that has taken her to prominent concert venues throughout the United States. Besides her role with the Downey Symphony Orchestra, she is also the resident conductor at the University of Southern California Thornton Symphony, Chamber Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble. The governance of the Downey Symphonic Society is entrusted to a Board of Directors, comprising individuals who are dedicated to the organization's vision and success. The board officers include Anthony Crespo as President, Eric Pierce as Vice President, Bill Hare as Treasurer, and Mary Stevens as Secretary. The board is further supported by members Pat Gil, Bob Goldstein, JoAnne Gronley, Ruth Hillecke, Mark Keller, Cindy Kovach, Larry Lewis, Lorine Parks, and Joyce Sherwin, all of whom play a vital role in steering the organization towards its goals. The Downey Symphony Orchestra presents a range of concerts each season, including the popular "Pops in the Park" event, and offers ticketing options for its audience members.
